Learn which flight simulator joystick buttons to assign first, including trim, brakes, flaps, gear, views, autopilot disconnect and PTT.
In a general flight simulator, assign joystick buttons first to elevator trim up/down, wheel brakes, flaps up/down, landing gear, and cockpit-view reset. Add autopilot disconnect and push-to-talk next. Keep pitch, roll, yaw and throttle on analogue axes; reserve scarce buttons for commands you need without taking a hand off the controls.
Should I assign axes before joystick buttons?
Yes: configure pitch, roll, yaw and throttle axes before assigning any buttons. Confirm that each axis moves in the correct direction, reaches its full range and does not conflict with another controller.
Propeller pitch, mixture, collective, spoilers and individual toe brakes also belong on analogue axes when your hardware provides them. If you have no throttle axis, throttle increase and decrease become priority button assignments. What should the first eight joystick buttons control?
For a typical fixed-wing aircraft, this eight-button baseline covers the controls most often needed during take-off, approach and landing.
- Elevator trim nose-up: Put this on an easy-to-hold thumb button because trimming often requires several repeated inputs.
- Elevator trim nose-down: Keep it beside the nose-up button and verify the direction against the cockpit trim indicator.
- Wheel brakes: Use one button for both brakes if you do not have analogue toe-brake pedals. A trigger works well, provided it cannot be confused with another critical command.
- Flaps down or extend: A separate command is safer and more predictable than a single flap-cycle button.
- Flaps up or retract: Place it beside the extension button, but arrange the pair so they are difficult to reverse under pressure.
- Landing gear: A toggle is adequate for a momentary joystick button. Put it away from the trigger or your most frequently pressed controls to prevent accidental retraction.
- Autopilot disconnect: Assign this to a prominent thumb button when flying aircraft with an autopilot. It is more useful there than autopilot engagement because rapid disconnection matters most.
- Centre cockpit view: Use this to recover immediately after looking around. A point-of-view hat should normally pan the view rather than consume four ordinary buttons.

Should every aircraft use the same joystick profile?
No: keep a basic profile, then create aircraft-class profiles when the required controls differ substantially.

Save profiles under clear device and aircraft names. Some simulators store bindings per aircraft, while others use one device-wide profile, so check which profile is active before changing assignments.
Why does one joystick button trigger two actions?
A button usually performs two actions because the simulator has retained a default binding alongside your new assignment.
- Search by input: Press the affected button in the controls screen and inspect every command returned, including assignments under other control categories.
- Check modifiers: A modifier or shift layer can turn the same physical button into another command when a second control is held.
- Inspect every active device: A throttle, gamepad or second joystick may carry a conflicting assignment.
- Avoid unsuitable toggles: Momentary joystick buttons work with gear and light toggles, but maintained hardware switches should use explicit on/off or up/down commands where the simulator supports them.
- Confirm the active profile: Editing one profile and flying with another makes a correctly assigned button appear to be ignored.
Test the finished layout in a simple aircraft before using it on a full flight. Operate trim, flaps and brakes while parked, then check gear in flight because some aircraft inhibit retraction while weight is on the wheels. If you still reach for the keyboard during the circuit, that command is the next candidate for a joystick button.
