  3. Wheel brakes: One button can apply both brakes if you lack analogue toe-brake pedals. A trigger works for civilian flying, but not if that trigger already controls weapons or another critical function.
  4. Flaps extend: A dedicated extend command is more predictable than cycling through flap positions with one button.
  5. Flaps retract: Keep it beside the extend control, but arrange the pair so they are difficult to reverse under pressure.
  6. Landing gear: Use a toggle with a momentary button. Place it away from controls you press repeatedly so an accidental bump cannot retract the gear.
  7. Autopilot disconnect: Put this on a prominent thumb button in aircraft fitted with an autopilot. Rapid disconnection matters more than convenient engagement.
  8. Centre cockpit view: Use this to recover your forward view immediately. A point-of-view hat should normally pan or snap the view instead of consuming four ordinary buttons.

An elevator trim button changes the aircraft’s trimmed pitch condition in small steps, reducing the need to hold constant forward or backward pressure on the joystick.

Nose-up trim does not simply act as another pitch-up button. Establish the desired attitude and power first, hold the aircraft there, then trim away the control pressure. Verify both button directions against the cockpit trim wheel or indicator because labels and physical button layouts are easily reversed.

If trim runs continuously or jumps back after release, look for a second trim binding, a stuck hat switch or an absolute trim axis that is continuously reporting its position. An absolute hardware trim wheel can also overwrite trim changes made by an autopilot in some simulator and device combinations.

How should a flight simulator joystick and throttle share controls?

How do I put down the landing gear in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

With a standard PC keyboard profile, G normally toggles the landing gear down or up; there is no universal joystick button until you assign one.

Search the active controller profile for landing-gear commands. Bind a toggle command to one momentary joystick button, or use separate gear-down and gear-up commands with a maintained lever or two-position switch. Console combinations and customised presets vary, so the active controls profile is the reliable source rather than a memorised button number.

Confirm extension using the cockpit gear indicators, not just the external animation. Fixed-gear aircraft have nothing to lower, while aircraft-specific locks, hydraulic failures or operating limits may prevent the normal command from working.

Is there a push-start button in a flight simulator?

Usually not as a universal joystick command; engine starting is normally left to cockpit controls or an automatic engine-start command provided by the simulator.

Engine start is a low-priority joystick assignment because it happens on the ground and may involve fuel selectors, mixture or condition levers, magnetos and a starter that must be held. Assign automatic start only if you have spare buttons and regularly fly simple aircraft. On multi-engine aircraft, a single generic start button may also operate the wrong engine or bypass the procedure you intend to simulate.

Pushback is a separate ground command, not an engine push-start function. It can remain on the keyboard or cockpit interface until all time-critical in-flight controls have been assigned.

Use clear profile names that identify both the device and aircraft class. Some simulators save controls per aircraft, while others apply a device-wide profile, so check the selected profile before editing or flying.

Why is a joystick command missing, ignored or triggering two actions?

  • It works only with another button held: Check modifier and shift layers in both the simulator and any controller software.
  • A toggle behaves backwards: Replace it with separate on/off or up/down commands when using a maintained hardware switch.

Test the finished flight sim button layout in a simple aircraft. Operate trim, flaps, brakes and views while parked, then check gear and autopilot disconnect in a safe airborne test. Any command that still sends you to the keyboard during take-off, approach or landing is the next candidate for a joystick button.
