To plan and transfer a route to a Garmin GPS, build and validate the flight plan first, export it in the exact format supported by that Garmin model or simulated avionics package, use its supported import method, then inspect every waypoint and activate the route. - Identify the receiving unit. Record the exact Garmin model or simulated avionics package, simulator and aircraft. Check which route formats it imports, how routes are transferred and whether it supports airways, procedures and user waypoints.
- Build the basic route. Select the departure and destination, then add appropriate airways or individual fixes. - Add procedures carefully. Select a SID, STAR or approach only when the runway and weather justify it. Simulator ATC may assign a different runway, so keeping procedures out of the exported route can sometimes make later changes easier.

- Compare navigation databases. The planner and GPS should use matching navigation data where possible. A receiver may reject a valid fix or substitute a different procedure when its database does not match the planner.
- Export for the receiver. Select the target Garmin, simulator or aircraft profile instead of exporting a generic file and changing its extension afterwards.
Which flight-plan format should I export?
The correct flight-plan format is the one explicitly supported by the receiving simulator, aircraft or Garmin model; identical-looking routes are not interchangeable.

Common aviation and simulator extensions include .pln, .fms, .fpl and .gpx, but an extension alone does not prove compatibility. Some receivers need airway segments expanded into individual fixes; others cannot import SIDs, STARs, approaches or coordinate-defined waypoints.
How do I transfer and activate the route?
The import method depends on the target, but every successful transfer follows the same sequence: export, import, load, inspect and activate.
- Export a fresh file. Choose the correct target profile and use a short, simple route name if the receiver has older naming restrictions.
- Use the supported transfer path. In a simulator this may be its flight planner, EFB, aircraft importer or documented route folder. A physical Garmin may instead use a supported utility, removable media, cable or wireless transfer.
- Load the route in the GPS. Open the stored-flight-plan or route catalogue, select the imported plan and choose the appropriate load or activate command. Merely placing the file in a folder or on a card is insufficient.
- Inspect every leg. Confirm the departure, destination, waypoint order, airway exits, procedures and approach transitions. Remove duplicate fixes and resolve any discontinuity or blank leg.
- Activate the correct leg. Make sure the first desired leg is active and the aircraft is not being directed back to an earlier waypoint.

Why does the Garmin reject or alter the imported route?
Most failed Garmin route imports come from the wrong export profile, mismatched navigation data or route elements that the receiver cannot represent.
- “Waypoint not found”: compare database versions, check the identifier and replace obsolete or unsupported fixes.
- The route is missing: confirm that it was imported into the documented location and then loaded from the unit's route catalogue.
- Only departure and destination appear: export individual fixes rather than relying on airway names that the receiver cannot expand.
- The route is truncated: reduce the waypoint count, remove unnecessary points or divide it into shorter routes.
- Procedures differ: delete the imported SID, STAR or approach and select it directly from the GPS database.
- A GPX file produces a drawn line but no guidance: it was probably exported as a track rather than a route.
- The import fails without an error: try a short test route containing only departure, one recognised fix and destination. If that works, add the remaining elements in stages.
Do not repair incompatibility by renaming one extension as another. Re-export using the correct target format because the data structure inside the file is what the receiver reads.
Can I transfer a simulator route to a real Garmin?
A simulator route can be transferred to some portable Garmin units when the format and transfer method are supported, but it must not be treated as an approved real-world flight plan without independent verification.
A route transfer does not update the GPS navigation database, charts, terrain data or procedures. For real flight, use the unit's documented process and verify the route against current authorised aeronautical information; simulator planning data may be incomplete or from a different cycle.
How do I make the autopilot follow the imported route?
The autopilot will follow an imported Garmin route only when the route and desired leg are active, the CDI source is set to GPS, and lateral navigation mode is armed or engaged.
If the aircraft turns towards the wrong fix, inspect the active leg before using direct-to.
