Learn how to use the Garmin G1000 in a flight simulator, including flight plans, GPS/VLOC, autopilot, approaches and common fixes.
To use the Garmin G1000 in a flight simulator, power the avionics, build or load a route, confirm the active leg and GPS navigation source, then use the PFD, MFD and aircraft autopilot to fly it. For an approach, load the correct procedure, verify sequencing and arm the appropriate guidance.
The workflow is broadly shared by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, but their G1000 implementations are not identical. G1000 screens and controls
The G1000 divides primary flying information, navigation and route management between two displays and a set of concentric knobs, buttons and softkeys.

G1000 colour coding is a useful cross-check: GPS guidance is normally magenta, while VOR and localiser guidance is green. The labels and button behaviour may vary slightly between simulated aircraft.
How do you enter and fly a G1000 flight plan?
Use Direct-To for a simple course to one waypoint; use the FPL and PROC pages when you need an airway route, arrival or instrument approach.
- Power the avionics. Turn on the battery, generator or alternator, and avionics master as required by the aircraft. Allow the displays and attitude system to initialise. A dark display usually means an unpowered avionics bus or a display dimmer turned down, not a failed G1000.
- Set the basics. Adjust the altimeter setting, heading bug, map range and desired COM frequency. Tune standby frequencies with the COM knobs, then transfer them to active using the frequency swap button.
- Choose a route method. Press Direct-To, enter the waypoint identifier and confirm it for a single destination. For a full route, open FPL, activate the cursor with the FMS knob, enter each waypoint and press ENT after every selection.
- Check imported routes. A plan created outside the cockpit may load automatically, require manual import or fail to transfer into a third-party aircraft. In MSFS, our route-building and verification steps for the built-in planner explain how to check procedures and active legs before departure.
- Verify the active leg. On the flight-plan page, the active leg should be highlighted and drawn magenta on the map. If the wrong leg is active, select the intended leg and use the available Activate Leg command rather than repeatedly pressing Direct-To.
- Select GPS guidance. Press the CDI softkey until GPS is displayed on the PFD. This tells the CDI and compatible autopilot to use the flight plan rather than a tuned VOR or localiser.
- Intercept the course. Hand-fly towards the magenta line or use heading mode to establish a shallow intercept. NAV may remain armed until the aircraft is close enough to capture the active course.
- Monitor sequencing. Confirm each waypoint becomes active in turn. OBS or SUSP mode prevents automatic sequencing, while a discontinuity or badly chosen procedure transition can send the aircraft towards an unexpected fix.
The G1000's altitude constraints do not necessarily command a climb or descent. Unless the simulated installation supports coupled VNAV and it is correctly armed, you must select the altitude and use pitch, vertical-speed or flight-level-change modes yourself.
How do you use the G1000 autopilot?
Engage the aircraft's autopilot only after selecting the required lateral and vertical modes, then read the mode annunciator at the top of the PFD to confirm what is active and what is merely armed.
- HDG follows the heading bug. Set the bug before engagement to prevent an unexpected turn.
- NAV follows the selected GPS, VOR or localiser source. It cannot follow the magenta route if VLOC is selected.
- APR arms approach guidance, such as localiser and glideslope or a supported GPS glidepath.
- ALT holds or captures altitude. Selecting a new altitude alone does not make the aircraft climb or descend.
- VS commands a vertical speed. Watch airspeed because an excessive climb rate can lead to a stall.
- FLC changes altitude while maintaining a selected airspeed; power remains the pilot's responsibility in most piston and turboprop installations.

How do you fly an approach with the G1000?
Load the correct approach and transition, verify every waypoint, select the appropriate navigation source and arm approach mode only when established for a valid intercept.
- Load the procedure early. Press PROC, select the approach and choose the runway and transition. Use an initial approach fix when flying the full procedure; choose vectors-to-final only when ATC will provide vectors.
- Inspect the sequence. Check that the approach has joined the en-route flight plan sensibly. Loading normally appends it without changing the active leg, while activating it may send the aircraft directly towards its transition or initial fix.
- Use the correct source. Remain in GPS for an RNAV or GPS approach. For an ILS, tune and identify the localiser, confirm the inbound course and switch to VLOC before interception unless that installation performs a verified automatic switch.
- Intercept from the correct position. Join the final approach course at a sensible angle and intercept a glideslope from below. Arm APR and check for LOC and GS on an ILS, or GPS and GP for an approach with supported GPS vertical guidance.
- Do not assume vertical guidance exists. An LNAV-only approach provides lateral guidance without a glidepath. Fly published step-down altitudes and minima rather than forcing a descent with APR mode.
- Handle the missed approach. At the missed-approach point, the G1000 may enter SUSP. Start the missed approach, then release SUSP when ready for the unit to sequence through the missed-approach legs.
Why is the G1000 not following the flight plan?
A G1000 usually fails to follow a route because the wrong navigation source, active leg or autopilot mode is selected—not because the route itself is missing.

Use the PFD annunciations as the final authority: they show what the simulated avionics are actually doing. The moving map may display the route correctly even while the CDI, active leg or autopilot is configured to follow something else.
