How do procedure turns work, and how do I fly one?

In real-world aviation and IFR simulation, a procedure turn is a published manoeuvre that reverses direction to intercept an approach course inbound. Cross the procedure-turn fix, fly the charted outbound track and altitude, reverse on the protected side, then intercept inbound while remaining within the charted limit and obeying ATC or NoPT restrictions.

What does a procedure turn do?

A procedure turn positions the aircraft on the inbound approach course inside protected airspace. It is used when arriving at an initial approach fix from a direction that does not permit a safe, stable straight-in intercept.

The chart’s procedure-turn barb identifies the protected side of the outbound course. Protection depends on the published altitude, speed limits, distance limit and procedure design, so the barb is not permission to manoeuvre anywhere around the fix.

A common misconception is that every procedure turn uses one universal 45/180 pattern. FAA-style charts may allow some discretion when only a conventional barb is shown, while published headings, tracks, timings, racetracks and base turns must be followed as depicted. ICAO procedures can be more prescriptive, so the applicable chart and local rules always take priority.

When is a procedure turn required?

In FAA-style operations, a depicted procedure turn or holding pattern in lieu of a procedure turn is normally flown when cleared for the approach unless a published or ATC-issued exception applies.

You would normally omit the reversal when:

  • Your arrival route or approach segment is marked NoPT.
  • ATC vectors you onto the final approach course.
  • ATC clears you specifically for a straight-in approach.
  • You are conducting a timed approach from a holding fix.
  • The chart states that procedure turns are not authorised.

Straight-in landing minima do not by themselves cancel a depicted procedure turn. Conversely, never add an uncharted reversal simply because it would be convenient; protected airspace may not exist on that side of the approach.

Outside FAA procedures, clearance wording and course-reversal rules differ. Follow the chart, the applicable aeronautical publication and ATC rather than importing US procedure-turn conventions.

Is a hold-in-lieu procedure turn the same thing?

No; it serves the same course-reversal purpose but must be flown as the depicted holding pattern rather than as a free-form conventional procedure turn.

How do I fly a standard 45/180 procedure turn?

A conventional 45/180 procedure turn uses an outbound leg, a 45-degree turn towards the protected side, and an opposite 180-degree turn that creates an intercept back towards the inbound course.

  1. Brief the entire approach. Identify the procedure-turn fix, outbound and inbound courses, protected side, altitude restrictions, speed limit, maximum distance, final approach fix and missed approach. Our guide to reading approach plan and profile views explains where these details appear.
  2. Configure before the fix. Reduce to a manageable approach speed, identify the navigation aid, select the correct navigation source and set the courses required by your instrument. Do not arrive at the fix while still programming avionics or descending rapidly.
  3. Cross the fix and track outbound. Maintain the assigned or published altitude and follow the charted outbound course. Start any timing at the point specified by the procedure, not automatically when the fix passes beneath you.
  4. Begin the reversal on the protected side. At a point that keeps the complete manoeuvre within the charted limit, turn 45 degrees towards the procedure-turn barb. Fly the prescribed time or distance, then turn 180 degrees in the opposite direction. A published heading, turn direction, DME value or timing overrides this generic technique.
  5. Intercept the inbound course. Roll out with a sensible intercept angle, verify the correct navigation source and confirm that the indication is behaving as expected. Avoid chasing a full-scale needle with steep banks.
  6. Complete the approach profile. Once established inbound, descend only where the chart authorises it. Observe every step-down fix, final approach altitude and minimum; completing the reversal is not automatic permission to descend.

How do I correct for wind and remain within the limit?

Wind correction must keep the aircraft inside the protected area while preserving a controlled inbound intercept. A charted course is a ground track, not necessarily the heading you should hold.

Crab as required while tracking outbound. A tailwind on the outbound portion consumes the available distance quickly, so begin the reversal earlier when pilot discretion is permitted. If a time, heading or turn point is prescribed, follow it rather than inventing a correction that changes the published procedure.

The distance limit is normally measured from the stated fix or DME source, which may not be the navigation aid you first expect. Verify the source before relying on the displayed distance. On the return, anticipate wind drift and lead the inbound-course capture rather than waiting until the indicator passes through centre.

How should I use GPS or the autopilot for a procedure turn?

Use automation to fly the cleared geometry, not to decide whether the procedure turn is required.

  • Load the full approach transition from the appropriate initial approach fix. Selecting vectors-to-final can remove the course-reversal legs and intermediate altitude constraints.
  • Inspect the programmed legs before reaching the fix. Confirm the hold direction, outbound course, altitude and sequence back onto final.
  • Use heading mode when necessary. If a conventional turn is not represented correctly in the flight plan, fly it in heading mode and arm navigation or approach capture only after selecting the correct source and establishing suitable intercept geometry.
  • Watch leg sequencing. Some avionics pause, suspend sequencing or require confirmation before leaving a hold. The exact behaviour varies by unit and simulated aircraft.

Automation can capture the wrong leg perfectly. Monitor the chart, position and active navigation source throughout the turn.

Does the navigation aid change the procedure-turn technique?

No; the chart determines the protected geometry, but VOR, localiser, ADF and GPS indications require different interpretation.

VOR indications change between TO and FROM operation, and some displays may provide reverse sensing on an outbound localiser segment. An ADF has no selected course bar, so heading, relative bearing and wind correction must be managed directly. What procedure-turn mistakes cause the most trouble?

Most procedure-turn failures come from an incorrect briefing rather than poor aircraft handling.

  • Turning on the wrong side: confirm the barb or published holding direction before crossing the fix.
  • Starting the clock at the wrong point: use the charted timing reference rather than assuming every timer begins over the fix.
  • Ignoring the distance limit: strong wind and excessive speed can carry the aircraft outside protected airspace before the reversal is complete.
  • Descending too early: maintain the published altitude until both lateral position and the profile permit descent.
  • Confusing a HILPT with a conventional turn: fly the hold entry and pattern shown on the chart.
  • Activating vectors-to-final: this may delete the procedure turn and leave the avionics aiming directly at final.

What should I do if the procedure turn goes wrong?

If you turn onto the wrong side, exceed the charted limit or cannot establish inbound safely, stop any further descent and tell ATC immediately. Request vectors, another approach clearance or holding instructions rather than trying to rescue the approach with a steep or improvised turn.

After joining final, discontinue an unstable approach and follow the applicable missed-approach instructions. In FAA operations, an early go-around does not normally authorise an early turn onto the missed approach; unless ATC directs otherwise, continue towards the missed-approach point before beginning its turning segment.
