How do I set up VR in DCS World?
To set up VR in DCS World, connect your headset in PC VR mode, make its software the active OpenXR runtime, then enable the virtual reality headset option in DCS and restart the simulator. Bind a VR recenter control, set DCS Pixel Density to 1.0, and tune performance from a conservative baseline.
DCS World VR setup steps
- Prepare the headset and PC. Install the headset’s PC software, update the graphics driver and confirm that the headset can display its PC VR environment. DCS World must be installed on the PC; a standalone headset cannot run it by itself.
- Select the correct OpenXR runtime. In the headset or VR platform software, use its option to make that platform the active OpenXR runtime. Only one runtime can be active, and selecting the wrong one is a common reason DCS opens on the monitor.
- Establish the PC VR connection first. For a wired or wireless standalone headset, enter its PC-link mode before starting DCS. For a native PC headset, start its control software and verify that head tracking works.
- Enable VR in DCS World. Launch DCS on the monitor, open Options, select the VR tab and enable the virtual reality headset setting. Apply the change and restart DCS when prompted. If the DCS launcher offers desktop and VR modes, choose VR.
- Configure cockpit interaction. Enable mouse interaction if you intend to click cockpit controls with the mouse. Under the UI Layer controls, bind recenter VR Headset to an easy-to-reach HOTAS button; VR Zoom is also useful for small displays and labels.
- Run a simple test flight. Use an uncomplicated free-flight mission rather than a busy multiplayer server. Sit in your normal position, look straight ahead and press the recenter binding once the cockpit has loaded.

Use the OpenXR runtime belonging to the software through which the headset is connected to the PC.

Modern DCS World builds support OpenXR directly, so legacy force-runtime switches and compatibility layers are normally unnecessary. Remove old command-line switches while troubleshooting; they can make DCS call a runtime different from the one selected in the headset software.

Do I need VR controllers for DCS World?
No, DCS World VR works well with a HOTAS and mouse, and VR hand controllers are optional.
We recommend binding flight controls, weapon controls, trim, communications and VR recenter to physical controls. Use the mouse for less frequent cockpit switches. If the mouse cursor will not reach a control, bring the DCS mirror window back into focus and check the VR mouse and cursor-confinement options. Recentring from the actual flying position also fixes many apparent cursor-alignment problems.
Why does DCS open on the monitor instead of the headset?
DCS usually opens in desktop mode because VR is disabled, the headset was not connected before launch or another OpenXR runtime is active.
- Confirm that the headset is in PC VR mode and tracking before starting DCS.
- Check that Enable Virtual Reality Headset remains selected in the DCS VR options, then fully restart the simulator.
- Make the intended platform the active OpenXR runtime. Starting SteamVR alone does not help if another runtime remains active.
- Remove obsolete VR command-line switches and temporarily disable third-party OpenXR overlays or API layers.
- Repair or verify the DCS installation using the installation platform’s built-in tool.
- Temporarily move user mods out of
Saved Games\DCS\Mods. Older installations may use a differently named DCS folder underSaved Games.
A picture on both the headset and monitor is normal: the monitor image is the VR mirror. If DCS crashes during the switch to VR, close it and clear the contents of the fxo and metashaders2 directories inside the relevant Saved Games\DCS folder. DCS rebuilds those shaders, so the first subsequent load may stutter.
How do I improve DCS VR clarity and frame rate?
Start with one neutral resolution scale, reduce expensive visual settings and change only one control at a time.
- Set DCS Pixel Density to 1.0. Begin with the OpenXR or headset render resolution at its default value. Raising both creates stacked supersampling and a steep GPU cost.
- Lower shadows, mirrors and visibility first. These often cost more than their visual benefit in the headset. Reduce texture quality if graphics memory is being exhausted.
- Test anti-aliasing and upscaling separately. Temporal upscaling can increase frame rate but may soften cockpit displays or leave ghosting around moving objects.
- Choose a sustainable headset refresh rate. A lower stable rate generally feels better than repeatedly missing the frame target. Motion reprojection can smooth head movement but may create artefacts around wings, rotors and cockpit frames.

Set the headset’s physical lens spacing through its hardware or software. The DCS Force IPD Distance control mainly changes perceived cockpit scale; it is not a substitute for setting the headset to your actual interpupillary distance. Leave it disabled unless the cockpit looks unnaturally tiny or oversized.
