Yes—but only Xbox-compatible models. Learn which flight simulator joysticks work on Xbox, how to connect one and why generic PC sticks fail.
Yes, you can use a flight simulator joystick on Xbox, but it must be explicitly compatible with your Xbox console and supported by the game. Generic PC USB joysticks usually will not work. For Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X|S, choose a licensed Xbox flight stick or HOTAS.
Can you use any USB joystick on Xbox?
No. Xbox does not support the broad range of generic USB flight controls that Windows does. A joystick fitting the console's USB port proves only that it can be connected physically, not that Xbox or the simulator can recognise it.
| Joystick type | Expected result on Xbox | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for Xbox flight stick or HOTAS | Usually works in supported games | Exact console generation and game compatibility |
| PC-only USB joystick | Usually not recognised | An Xbox logo or explicit Xbox support, not merely USB compatibility |
| Dual PC/Xbox model | Works when configured correctly | Set its hardware switch or operating mode to Xbox before connecting it |
| Older Xbox peripheral | May be incompatible | Support for Xbox Series X|S rather than an older Xbox generation |
| Joystick connected through an adaptor | Unreliable or unsupported | Adaptors cannot guarantee native game recognition or correct axis mapping |
Compatibility is checked at two levels: the hardware must work with the console, and the individual game must support it. Our MSFS 2024 controller compatibility guidance explains this distinction in more detail.
Which Xbox flight stick should you choose?
Choose a model carrying explicit Xbox compatibility for the console generation you use. Common options include the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One and Turtle Beach VelocityOne Flightstick, but support should still be confirmed for the particular simulator.
- Flight stick: compact, easy to place and often equipped with twist-rudder control. It suits players without room for separate pedals and a throttle.
- HOTAS: provides a separate throttle and more physical controls. Choose it when you want better power management and fewer gamepad button combinations.
- Yoke: better matches many civilian aircraft, but requires more desk space and may need a separate throttle quadrant.
Our comparison of Xbox-compatible flight sticks and HOTAS controls covers the practical differences between the main choices.
How do you connect a joystick to Xbox?
An Xbox-compatible joystick should be connected before launching the simulator, then selected and tested in the game's controls screen.
- Confirm compatibility: check that the exact model supports your Xbox generation and the flight simulator you intend to use.
- Select Xbox mode: if the joystick has a PC/Xbox switch, move it to Xbox before plugging the device in.
- Connect it directly: use a console USB port initially rather than an unpowered hub. Attach any separate throttle or pedals according to the hardware's supported arrangement.
- Launch the simulator: open its controls screen and confirm that the joystick appears as a separate device.
- Test every axis: move the stick, twist rudder and throttle through their full ranges. Confirm that aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle respond in the correct directions.
- Save a control profile: keep separate profiles for aircraft requiring different throttle, propeller or mixture assignments.
Default Xbox profiles are often usable, but dead zones and sensitivity may still need adjustment. Our joystick calibration and axis setup instructions explain how to correct wandering controls, excessive sensitivity and limited travel.
Can you use a joystick and Xbox controller together?
Yes. In Microsoft Flight Simulator, the joystick can handle primary flight controls while the Xbox controller remains available for cameras, menus or commands that are not mapped to the stick.
Check for duplicate axis assignments, however. If both devices control the same elevator, aileron, rudder or throttle axis, stick movement or gamepad drift can make the aircraft twitch or fight your input. Remove the unwanted axis binding rather than increasing the dead zone on the working device.
Why is the flight joystick not recognised?
A joystick that does not appear at all is usually incompatible, set to PC mode or connected after the game initialised its controllers.
- Disconnect it, select Xbox mode and reconnect it directly to the console.
- Fully close and restart the simulator with the joystick already attached.
- Install any applicable peripheral firmware update using the manufacturer's supported update method.
- If the device appears but does nothing, create or select a control profile and assign its axes.
- If an axis moves backwards, use the simulator's reverse-axis option; do not replace an analogue axis with two button commands.
- If inputs flicker, disconnect other control devices temporarily to identify conflicting assignments.
Do not assume that a PC joystick connected to an Xbox One, computer or mobile device will pass through to a cloud-streamed simulator. Cloud clients may accept a standard gamepad without forwarding specialist flight peripherals. Native installation on a supported Xbox Series X|S is the dependable arrangement for Microsoft Flight Simulator joystick use.
If compatible hardware still fails to appear, follow our step-by-step joystick detection checks before resetting all control profiles.
