How do I use an iPad as a flight simulator panel?

You can use an iPad as a flight simulator instrument panel by running a companion panel app that receives simulator data over your local network, or by using the iPad as a second display for popped-out instruments. A companion app gives the best touch control; an extended display is simpler but less flexible.

For general flight simulation, the principle is similar in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, but the required connection method depends on the simulator, computer platform and aircraft.

Do not assume every aviation app can connect to a desktop simulator. Some are self-contained mobile simulators or static training displays. How do I connect an iPad instrument panel?

The usual setup is to run a receiver or plug-in on the simulator computer and connect the iPad to it over the same local network.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the app against the exact simulator and computer platform. An app labelled “MSFS compatible” may support the Windows edition through SimConnect but not Xbox or PlayStation.
  2. Install the computer-side component. Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX and Prepar3D panel apps commonly use SimConnect. X-Plane apps may use a plug-in, DataRefs or network data output. If an MSFS panel cannot see the simulator, follow our SimConnect installation and repair notes rather than downloading unrelated DLL files.
  3. Join the same local network. Connect the iPad and simulator computer to the same router. A wired connection from the computer to the router usually reduces latency, while the iPad can remain on Wi-Fi.
  4. Start the simulator and receiver. Load an aircraft at an airport and power its avionics. Many panel apps show nothing useful while the simulator is still at the main menu.
  5. Connect from the iPad. Automatic discovery may find the computer. If not, enter its local address, normally in a private range such as 192.168.x.x, together with any port specified by the app.
  6. Allow the firewall prompt. Permit the receiver on the active private network. Do not expose or forward its port to the public internet.
  7. Select the correct aircraft profile. Match the panel to the aircraft's avionics, then test attitude, heading, altitude, radio changes and switch inputs while parked.

How do I use the iPad as a second display instead?

An extended-display connection lets you drag supported simulator windows onto the iPad without rebuilding the panel in a separate app.

On a Mac, compatible simulators can use the operating system's iPad display feature. A Windows PC needs compatible second-display software because iPadOS does not natively behave as a Windows monitor. After extending the desktop, use the simulator's pop-out command, move the instrument window onto the iPad and adjust display scaling until labels remain readable.

In MSFS, toolbar windows and cockpit instrument pop-outs are different types of panel. Can the iPad control switches as well as display instruments?

The iPad can operate switches only when the chosen app or display system sends writable commands back to the simulator.

A dedicated panel app may provide touch-friendly knobs, buttons and radio controls. An extended display can relay touch as mouse input if its display software supports that feature, but scrolling knobs, right-click actions and long presses may still be awkward. Plain screen mirroring or a video capture connection displays the cockpit but does not create a dependable interactive panel.

Aircraft compatibility matters most with complex add-ons. Their avionics may use custom variables and events rather than the simulator's standard commands. The iPad can then receive heading or altitude data while its buttons do nothing, or a generic panel may display values that do not match the aircraft. Choose an aircraft-specific profile when one is explicitly supported.

Does an iPad instrument panel work with Xbox or PlayStation?

A full third-party iPad instrument panel usually requires a PC or Mac because consoles do not permit installation of the required receiver, SimConnect client or simulator plug-in.

Console support is possible only when the simulator or add-on provides its own supported external-device connection. Remote play and screen mirroring merely reproduce the console picture; they do not produce an independent PFD or radio stack. Why will the iPad panel not connect?

Most connection failures are caused by network isolation, a blocked receiver or an incompatible simulator profile.

  • No computer is discovered: leave guest Wi-Fi, disable VPN connections temporarily and check that the router is not isolating wireless clients.
  • The connection times out: verify the computer's local IP address and port, then allow the receiver through the firewall on private networks.
  • Instruments are blank or frozen: load a flight, power the aircraft's avionics and confirm that the plug-in or helper process is running.
  • Data works but buttons do not: the app may be read-only, the selected aircraft profile may be wrong or the aircraft may use unsupported custom events.
  • The display lags: wire the simulator computer to the router, improve the iPad's Wi-Fi signal and reduce the panel's refresh rate if that option exists.
  • A pop-out disappeared: the operating system may have remembered its position on a disconnected display. Reconnect the iPad or use the operating system's window-move controls to return it to the main monitor.

Once connected, keep the iPad powered, prevent automatic screen locking during flights and mount it where it does not block cooling vents. A focused panel containing the instruments and controls you actually use is generally clearer and faster than trying to reproduce an entire cockpit on one small screen.
