Is the X-Plane 12 disc bad or is the drive failing?
A failure that follows the same numbered disc usually indicates damaged media; failures across every disc point more strongly to the optical drive, its connection or the operating system.
Check whether the disc appears in File Explorer, Finder or your Linux file manager before blaming the X-Plane installer. Test the drive with a known-good data DVD, not merely an audio CD, because a drive can read CDs while its DVD mechanism is failing.

How do I get the X-Plane 12 installer past a read error?
The safest fix is to clean and retest the media, stabilise the drive and then resume with a fresh copy of the official installer.
- Confirm the requested disc. Eject any other X-Plane media, insert the numbered disc requested by the installer and wait until the operating system has mounted it before continuing.
- Clean the readable surface. Remove fingerprints with a clean microfibre cloth, wiping in straight lines from the centre towards the edge. Do not rub in circles or use abrasive household remedies.
- Remove connection problems. Connect an external DVD drive directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. Try another cable or USB port if the drive disconnects, spins down or repeatedly remounts.
- Test another drive. If possible, use a second known-good DVD drive. Copying one sizeable file from the disc to temporary local storage is a useful read test, but do not treat a homemade copy as the installation source unless the official instructions explicitly support it.

- Check the destination. Install to a user-writable folder with enough free space for the simulator and selected scenery. Avoid protected system directories if they trigger permission errors.
- Retry only after correcting the cause. Repeatedly forcing the installer past a

Can I resume installation without starting again?
Yes, the X-Plane installer can normally continue into the existing installation folder and retain files that were copied successfully.
Select the same X-Plane 12 root folder rather than creating a second nested folder such as X-Plane 12/X-Plane 12. Let the installer check the existing files, then continue when it requests the corrected or replacement disc. Do not delete a large partial installation unless the installer cannot validate it or official support directs you to start clean.
If the unreadable disc contains only optional scenery, the installer may let you omit the affected region and add it later. Do not skip media containing required program files, and do not assume every numbered disc is optional.
Can I download missing files instead of using the DVD?
Not automatically: a boxed X-Plane 12 licence and a digital-download licence are not necessarily interchangeable.
A newer installer or updater may repair eligible program files, but it should not be assumed to replace all scenery from an unreadable DVD or convert the boxed licence into a digital key. Avoid unofficial disc images; they can contain altered files and do not solve the licence requirement. Keep any disc designated for ownership verification even after installation succeeds.
What if one X-Plane 12 disc is genuinely defective?
A disc that produces the same read error in two working DVD drives should be replaced through the seller or the publisher's support channel.
Provide proof of purchase, the disc number, the exact error and the results of testing another drive. Ask whether replacement media or authorised digital fulfilment is available, but do not assume either is included with every boxed edition.
