We use X-Plane 12 as the desktop comparison because it is the relevant modern edition. If you mean X-Plane 11, the core differences in platform, controls, expansion and multiplayer remain much the same, although its environmental rendering and other features belong to an older generation.
Which simulator is more realistic?
X-Plane 12 has the higher realism ceiling, especially when a well-modelled aircraft is paired with proper flight controls. Its flight model calculates aerodynamic forces across sections of the aircraft, while the simulator supports changing weather, weight and balance, icing, component failures and detailed avionics.
That does not make every X-Plane aircraft equally accurate. The flight model still depends on good aircraft data, and system depth is created by each aircraft developer. A basic model may expose only essential controls, while a sophisticated add-on can reproduce start sequences, electrical buses, fuel management and realistic FMS behaviour. Infinite Flight is not merely an arcade game. It can reinforce traffic-pattern work, navigation, approach setup, cockpit scanning and radio discipline. Its limitations appear when practising type-specific cockpit flows, abnormal procedures or systems that require many interactive controls.
Neither product automatically becomes an approved training device simply because its flight behaviour is convincing. Formal training credit depends on the complete hardware and software installation being approved for that purpose.
Which is better for multiplayer and ATC?
Infinite Flight is easier for organised multiplayer and human ATC because those functions are built around the same mobile account and application. Pilots can join shared servers and communicate with human controllers without assembling separate desktop client software.
Access depends on the applicable subscription, account standing and server rules. Human controllers also cannot cover every airport at every hour, so buying Infinite Flight does not guarantee live ATC for a particular route.
X-Plane includes automated ATC and networking tools, but serious human-controlled online flying usually involves a separate service, account and client configuration. X-Plane is more flexible once configured; Infinite Flight offers the simpler route from installation to a populated online session.
Can X-Plane run on a phone or tablet?
X-Plane 12 does not run on phones or tablets, but a separate product called X-Plane Mobile does. This distinction causes many poor comparisons between X-Plane and Infinite Flight.
Treat desktop X-Plane and X-Plane Mobile as separate products. A desktop licence, plug-ins, custom scenery and aircraft add-ons do not transfer into the mobile application. What hardware and internet connection do they need?
X-Plane needs a compatible desktop computer and substantially more local storage, while Infinite Flight is designed around supported iOS and Android devices. X-Plane also makes much better use of dedicated controls, multiple displays and supported VR equipment.
Desktop scenery packages can occupy significant space, so check the operating-system, storage and purchase-channel considerations in our X-Plane 12 installation guidance before committing. Infinite Flight avoids a desktop installation, but screen size, battery use, thermal throttling and network quality can affect long sessions. A tablet generally provides easier cockpit reading and more precise touch input than a small phone.
Do not assume every feature works offline. X-Plane can handle local solo flights after installation and activation, but live services, downloads and multiplayer need a connection. Infinite Flight's multiplayer, human ATC, account services and remotely delivered data also depend on internet access.
