Alidair Scotland Viscount 735 1978Repaint

One of two series 735 bought from Iraqi Airways G-BFMW served all its time with Alidair flying for the Scottish division. Taking up UK marks in March 1978 it was withdrawn in January 1982 and later broken up. After a couple of spells on lease to Dan Air, G-ARGR was back in Alidair livery in 1979. This livery had slightly evolved from the early days of Viscount 700 operations. Alidair Viscount 708 (DAN Air basic). Having spent time on lease to DAN Air in their full livery, G-ARIR was returned to service initially still in partial DAN Air basic and Alidair titles applied on a sticker covering the former operator's name. This aircraft survived Alidair/Inter City to be sold to Janus and later MMM Aero Services of Zaire, but only got as far as Ostend in Belgium where eventually it was broken up. Inter City Viscount 708 (Alidair livery). March 1981 saw Alidair merge the various divisions to form Inter City Airlines. Unfortunately the airline suffered losses and in September 1983 was sold to British Air Ferries. The three surviving Viscount 700's were of no interest to BAF. Janus Airways of Lydd in Kent bought the three remaining Viscount 700 series from BAF who had taken over Inter City Airlines. Only two entered service and spent the summer season 1984 on coach air services across the English Channel. One of the rarer members of the Alidair fleet this aircraft spent much of its time out on lease and also was stranded in Guernsey for some months under repair after a nosewheel collapse on landing. Originally built for Lufthansa it was sold to Airwork in February 1972 who sold it on to the Sultan of Oman Air Force as 503. Bought from Alidair in September 1977 where it had been G-AZNH, this aircraft was returned to the UK Airline in December the same year. It was due to be leased to Redcoat in January 1978 but it is not clear if that took place.
