This freeware add-on enhances KHFD, commonly referred to as Hartford–Brainard, located near downtown Hartford in Connecticut. Developed by Richard Kittredege, it introduces refined details for those seeking a more immersive experience in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. The package aims to depict accurate placements of structures and other airport elements within this bustling general aviation facility.

Refined Layout and Structures

The detailed coverage of this airfield elevates the overall atmosphere when navigating or performing circuit flights. Many of the on-site buildings and ground objects have been positioned precisely to match the real-world airport. In particular, the modified textures help to mimic ramp areas, aprons, and adjacent taxi routes with greater authenticity.

Essential Add-On Guidance

Although the author utilized Flight1 Instant Scenery to create these modifications, it is not necessary for you to have that software installed to enjoy the updated visuals. However, UT-FSX_Usa from Flight1 is recommended to ensure full compatibility with surrounding terrain data. Such enhancements bolster the overall environment around Hartford, including its proximity to the Connecticut River and the city skyline.

Key Features

  • Realistic detailing of key airport structures
  • Improved apron and taxiway alignments for KHFD
  • Compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X, leveraging terrain improvements when using UT-FSX_Usa
  • Natural integration with default scenery for seamless transitions

Installation Procedure

  1. Locate the Hartford-Brainard.bgl file included with this package.
  2. Copy or move that file into your Addon Scenery/scenery folder.
  3. Launch the simulator and allow any scenery indexes to update automatically.

Additional Notes for Flight Enthusiasts

Hartford–Brainard is renowned for its role in general aviation traffic, offering multiple different approach paths and plenty of opportunities for short-haul flights. Whether practicing circuits or cross-country flights, the lighting enhancements and carefully placed objects included in this package should help simulate the feel of a busy regional field. By installing UT-FSX_Usa, you can add an extra layer of realism to the broader Connecticut area, especially around the riverine landscape that defines the city’s geography.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
