They rarely model every local procedure, coordination task, emergency process or phraseology difference. Many use typed instructions rather than natural voice communication, so success may depend on learning the simulator's exact command grammar rather than speaking a valid clearance.
Why are my ATC commands being rejected?
The usual cause is syntax, not an incorrect control decision. Enter callsigns, command keywords and values in the order shown by the simulator's built-in command reference; extra words that sound natural over the radio may cause a typed parser to reject the instruction.
On live networks, failed communication is more often a microphone, selected frequency or push-to-talk problem. Test the recording device and assigned key before taking a position, and do not control until you can both transmit and receive clearly.
What equipment do free online ATC simulators need?
Browser radar simulators need only a keyboard, mouse and modern desktop browser, while live ATC networks also require a reliable headset, microphone and their approved controller client.
A second monitor is useful for charts, weather and sector information but is not essential. A joystick and rudder pedals provide no benefit when controlling traffic. Phones and small tablets are also poor choices for radar simulation because dense labels and rapid typed commands need screen space and a physical keyboard.
