How do I fix the insert disc error in FSX or FS2004?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix the Microsoft Flight Simulator insert disc error in FSX or FS2004 with the correct media, activation, shortcut and Windows compatibility checks.

To fix the “Please insert the Microsoft Flight Simulator disc” error, first identify whether you have boxed FSX, FSX Steam Edition or FS2004. Boxed FSX needs the correct media, shortcut and valid activation; FS2004’s legacy CD check fails on modern Windows. Steam Edition should never request a disc.

Which Flight Simulator version is asking for a disc?

The same message points to different faults in each Microsoft Flight Simulator release.

InstallationLikely causeWhat to check
Boxed FSXWrong DVD, mixed editions, damaged activation or an incorrect shortcutUse media and keys from the installed edition, then launch fsx.exe
FSX Steam EditionA shortcut is opening an old boxed installationLaunch through Steam and verify the installed files
FS2004 on an older compatible systemCD 4 is absent, unreadable or from another setInsert the original play disc and test the drive
FS2004 on Windows 10 or 11Windows cannot run the legacy SafeDisc authentication used by FS2004Use a lawful, version-matched disc-free launch method

How do I clear the FSX or FS2004 disc prompt?

Work through these checks in order, stopping when the simulator launches from its installed executable.

  1. Confirm the installed edition. FSX Standard, Deluxe, Gold, Acceleration and Steam Edition are not interchangeable. Two FSX editions can leave shortcuts and installation records pointing to different copies, so do not identify the edition from the desktop icon alone.
  2. Launch the installed executable directly. Open the simulator’s installation folder and run fsx.exe for FSX or fs9.exe for FS2004. If that works, delete the stale shortcut and create a new one. A shortcut must not target setup.exe, the optical drive or an older installation.
  3. Check the correct physical disc. Boxed FSX must use the DVD requested by the message and from the same edition set. Original FS2004 normally uses CD 4 as its play disc. Confirm that Windows can open the disc and read its files; if it cannot, clean the disc and test another optical drive before changing the simulator.
  4. Repair boxed FSX licensing. Complete the activation dialogue with the key supplied for that exact edition. If activation repeats, disappears or rejects a valid key, follow our guidance for repairing the FSX product key and licence record. Our boxed FSX Disc 1 troubleshooting checklist covers edition mismatches, DVD faults and installation records in more detail.
  5. Treat FS2004 on modern Windows differently. Windows 10 and 11 do not support the old disc-authentication system on which FS2004 relies. Compatibility mode does not restore it, and a perfectly readable CD 4 may still be rejected. Our explanation of FS2004 disc authentication on modern Windows covers the safe alternatives.
  6. Verify FSX Steam Edition through Steam. Steam Edition has no disc check. Start it from the Steam library, verify its installed files and replace any shortcut that opens a boxed copy. Inserting an FSX DVD cannot repair a Steam installation.

Will compatibility mode or reinstalling fix the error?

Compatibility mode cannot restore FS2004’s disabled disc-authentication driver, while reinstalling only helps when files, shortcuts, edition data or FSX activation are damaged.

For FSX, reinstall using one complete edition and its matching keys rather than combining discs from Standard, Deluxe, Gold or Acceleration sets. Back up add-ons and configuration files before removing an existing installation.

For FS2004, reinstalling from the CDs produces the same disc error on Windows 10 or 11 unless the launch method is also addressed. Apply the official 9.1 update before using any authorised replacement executable intended for 9.1; a base-version executable will not match an updated installation. Follow the correct FS2004 installation and update order for Windows 11 rather than repeatedly reinstalling over the same folder.

Should I re-enable the old disc driver or use a no-CD file?

Do not re-enable the obsolete SafeDisc driver or download an arbitrary no-CD executable. The retired driver presents a security risk, while unverified executables may contain malware or target the wrong simulator version.

Keep your original discs and product keys as proof of ownership and for future reinstalls. If FS2004 requires a disc-free launcher on modern Windows, it must come from a trusted source, be lawful where you live and match the installed 9.0 or 9.1 version exactly.
