FS2004 CDs install the base 9.0 version; Update 9.1 is applied separately. This distinction matters if a lawful disc-free executable is needed, because a 9.0 replacement must not be used with an updated 9.1 installation.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 do not use these FSX or FS2004 disc checks. If either appears to request legacy media, confirm that the shortcut is not opening an older simulator or add-on installer.

How do I clear the FSX or FS2004 insert disc error?

Work through these checks in order and stop once the simulator starts from its installed executable.

1. Identify when the message appears. A prompt shown while Setup is copying files is an installation-media problem. A prompt after opening fsx.exe or fs9.exe is a launch, licence or disc-authentication problem. 3. Run the installed executable directly. Open the simulator’s actual installation folder and launch fsx.exe for FSX or fs9.exe for FS2004. If this works, delete the old shortcut and create a new one. The shortcut target must not end in setup.exe, point to an optical drive or reference an installation folder that no longer exists.
4. Test the physical disc in Windows. Boxed FSX requires the requested DVD from the same product set. Original FS2004 normally uses CD 4 for its launch check. Why does it say the same thing after I insert the CD?

If FSX or FS2004 says the same thing after the requested disc is inserted, the programme is failing to verify the disc rather than simply detecting whether the drive contains media.

• If File Explorer cannot display the disc, suspect the CD/DVD, optical drive or USB drive connection.
• If File Explorer reads FS2004 CD 4 but Windows 10 or 11 repeats the prompt, the blocked SafeDisc authentication is the cause. Repeatedly reinserting the CD will not fix it.
• If FSX Steam Edition repeats a disc message, inspect the shortcut target. It is probably opening a boxed FSX executable or an add-on with its own media check.
• If boxed FSX recognises the DVD but still requests Disc 1, check that the media, product key and installed edition belong together. A damaged activation or installation record can produce the same loop.

Should I use a no-CD file?

For FS2004 on Windows 10 or 11, a trusted disc-free launch method is the practical alternative because the operating system cannot run the original authentication.
