Why are my controls not working in MSFS 2024?

Controls in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 usually fail because the wrong device or profile is selected, essential commands are unbound, two peripherals are fighting over the same axis, or the hardware is not being detected. Reconnect the device, select its active profile, verify axis bindings, remove duplicates, then test a default aircraft.

How do I identify what has stopped working?

The quickest diagnosis is to compare what happens outside the simulator, in the Controls settings and inside the aircraft.

A controller working in menus proves only that the platform can see it. It does not prove that elevator, aileron, rudder and throttle commands are assigned for flight.

Fix MSFS 2024 controls in the right order

Work from hardware detection to profiles and bindings; resetting everything first often destroys a partly working configuration without fixing the cause.

  1. Quit MSFS and reconnect the hardware. Connect flight controls before starting the simulator. On PC, prefer a direct USB port while troubleshooting and test the device in Windows' controller test panel. On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, confirm that the peripheral is supported on that console; USB connection alone does not guarantee compatibility.
  2. Open the Controls settings and select the physical device. Check each device tile rather than assuming MSFS has selected the joystick, yoke or throttle. A common mistake we see is editing the keyboard profile while the empty joystick profile remains active.
  3. Choose the correct preset. Reconnecting hardware, changing ports or creating a custom configuration can leave MSFS using a blank or different preset. If the expected preset has disappeared, follow our checks for restoring or replacing a missing controller profile.
  4. Use input search to identify every control. Move an axis or press a button and confirm which command MSFS sees. This catches mistaken assignments such as a throttle lever bound to mixture, or a yoke axis bound to the camera.
  5. Assign continuous axes as axes. A joystick should normally use commands such as Ailerons Axis, Elevator Axis and Rudder Axis. A physical throttle lever should use a throttle axis, not the button-style throttle increase and decrease commands. Multi-engine quadrants may need either one combined throttle axis or separate engine axes, depending on the hardware and aircraft.
  6. Remove competing analogue assignments. Check every connected device for duplicate elevator, rudder, throttle and brake axes. Two analogue devices bound to the same function can cause jumping or make one input appear unresponsive. Duplicate keyboard buttons are usually harmless unless one command is being held continuously.
  7. Save and verify the preset. Give the custom preset a recognisable name, apply it, leave the Controls screen and reopen it to confirm that the assignments remain. Our binding and profile walkthrough covers missing assignments and presets that appear not to save.
  8. Test a simple default aircraft. Start ready for take-off in a default general-aviation aircraft, with the simulator unpaused and the autopilot off. Bind only pitch, roll, yaw and throttle first. If those work, add brakes, trim, views and aircraft-specific commands in small groups.

Why are axes reversed, drifting or using only part of their travel?

Bad axis behaviour is normally a calibration or sensitivity problem rather than a failed control profile.

Calibrate the device at operating-system or hardware level first, then inspect the response curve in MSFS. Apply a small dead zone only when an axis jitters around its centre; an excessive dead zone makes the aircraft feel unresponsive. Use the reverse-axis option when full-left produces full-right, rather than trying to invert the response with an extreme sensitivity curve.

Throttle quadrants also need their physical detents and full travel checked. Some detailed aircraft provide an additional calibration page in their cockpit tablet or avionics, so a lever can work in a default aircraft yet miss idle or reverse in that particular add-on. Why do controls register in settings but not in the aircraft?

If MSFS detects the input but the aircraft does not respond, the active flight state or aircraft configuration is usually blocking or overriding it.

  • Pause and focus: exit normal pause, Active Pause or slew mode, close open dialogue boxes and return focus to the simulator window. Keyboard controls can be captured by a search box or another window.
  • Autopilot or assistance: disconnect the autopilot and disable any AI piloting option that is taking control. Assistance settings can also operate rudder, trim, take-off or landing functions automatically.
  • Walkaround state: in MSFS 2024, complete the pre-flight interaction and enter the pilot position before judging flight-control behaviour.
  • Aircraft locks and systems: remove control or gust locks where modelled. Larger aircraft may need electrical power and hydraulic pressure before some controls or cockpit indications behave normally.
  • Wrong command variant: a button assigned to rudder left is not equivalent to a rudder axis. Likewise, an individual engine throttle command may appear ineffective when the hardware is meant to control all engines.

What if only one aircraft has broken controls?

If the same profile works in a default aircraft, the hardware and basic MSFS configuration are sound.

Look for an aircraft-specific preset, cockpit tablet calibration, throttle-detent configuration or custom command required by that aircraft. Temporarily test the aircraft without utilities that alter input or aircraft systems. Do not wipe every controller profile to fix a problem confined to one add-on.

What if only the mouse and cockpit switches have stopped working?

Mouse interaction failures are usually caused by freelook, window focus, interaction mode or an unpowered cockpit rather than joystick bindings.

Should I reset or reinstall MSFS 2024?

Do not reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 until a fresh controller preset and a default aircraft have both failed.

Create a new preset for the affected device and bind only the four primary flight axes. If that works, rebuild the profile rather than importing the broken assignments. Reinstallation often leaves synchronised control settings untouched, while deleting local or cloud data can affect settings beyond the controller profile.

If the device does not respond outside MSFS, repair the hardware, connection or driver first. If it works outside MSFS but never appears inside the simulator, disconnect virtual and unused controllers, restart the simulator with only the required device attached, and test again before resetting broader settings.
