Can you use PMDG aircraft on a Mac? Not natively. Compare Intel Boot Camp, remote Windows PC and Xbox cloud options, with key limits.
PMDG aircraft do not run natively on macOS. You can use them on a Mac only by running a supported Windows simulator such as Microsoft Flight Simulator on an Intel Mac, streaming it from a Windows PC, or accessing an Xbox-compatible Marketplace release through cloud gaming. Apple silicon virtual machines are not a dependable solution.
Why does PMDG not run natively on macOS?
PMDG aircraft are compiled add-ons for a specific simulator and platform, not standalone applications that can be moved between operating systems. Current PMDG desktop products do not provide a supported macOS installation.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have no native Mac editions. The console releases of MSFS 2024, including PlayStation 5, do not change that. Legacy simulators associated with PMDG, including FSX and Prepar3D, are also Windows products.
The simulator generation matters too. A PMDG package made for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024, FSX or Prepar3D is not automatically interchangeable with another version. Before buying, check the aircraft-by-aircraft MSFS 2024 compatibility information rather than assuming an older package will work.
| Mac setup | PMDG support | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native macOS on Intel or Apple silicon | No | No compatible native simulator and PMDG package |
| Intel Mac booted directly into Windows | Conditional | Requires suitable graphics hardware, drivers and the exact simulator package |
| Apple silicon Windows virtual machine | Not dependable | Windows on ARM, virtual graphics and peripheral compatibility |
| Remote Windows gaming PC | Yes | The simulator and PMDG aircraft run on the Windows host |
| Xbox cloud gaming in a Mac browser | Conditional | Only Xbox-compatible Marketplace aircraft can be used |
Can an Intel Mac run PMDG through Boot Camp?
An Intel Mac can run PMDG after booting directly into Windows, provided its hardware can handle the simulator and aircraft. Boot Camp gives Windows direct access to the Mac's processor, graphics hardware and USB devices, making it far more suitable than a virtual machine.
- Confirm that the Mac uses an Intel processor. Check
About This Mac. Boot Camp Assistant is not available on Apple silicon Macs. - Check the complete compatibility chain. The Mac, Windows installation, host simulator and exact PMDG product must all be compatible. Meeting only the simulator's minimum requirements is a poor target for a systems-heavy airliner.
- Install and test the base simulator first. Fly a representative route, check cockpit performance and confirm that the yoke, throttle and pedals are recognised before installing PMDG.
- Use the correct purchase channel. Run PMDG's Windows installer or Operations Center on that Windows installation. Marketplace purchases must be installed through the simulator's own content system.
- Keep simulator versions separate. Do not copy or merge PMDG folders between MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024, FSX or Prepar3D installations.
There is also an operating-system support issue for older Intel Macs. Apple's Boot Camp tooling was designed around Windows 10, for which Microsoft support ended on 14 October 2025. Existing installations may still launch the simulator, but that does not make an unsupported Windows system a good long-term basis for an online simulator. Official Windows 11 support is not assured on older Intel Mac hardware.
Can Apple silicon Macs run PMDG locally?
Apple silicon Macs do not offer a dependable local way to run PMDG aircraft. They cannot use Boot Camp to start standard x86 Windows directly, so a virtual machine must combine Windows on ARM, application translation and virtualised graphics.
A launcher or installer opening successfully does not prove that the aircraft will work. The simulator may still fail because of DirectX features, graphics drivers, copy protection, external utilities or USB device forwarding. We would not buy a PMDG product on the assumption that a Mac virtual machine or Windows compatibility layer will support it.
Using a remote Windows PC instead
Streaming from a capable Windows PC is the most reliable Mac option, particularly for Apple silicon. Microsoft Flight Simulator, PMDG and supporting software are installed and executed on the Windows host; the Mac supplies the display, audio and remote input.
Connect flight controls directly to the Windows PC where possible. A controller attached to the Mac depends on the streaming software forwarding every axis and button correctly, which can cause missing devices or added latency. Our overview of the practical ways to run or stream Microsoft Flight Simulator on a Mac covers the wider setup choices.
Can Xbox cloud gaming run PMDG on a Mac?
Xbox cloud gaming can provide access to selected PMDG aircraft on a Mac, but only when both the simulator and that aircraft are available as Xbox-compatible cloud content. The Mac is displaying a remote console session; it is not running PMDG or Microsoft Flight Simulator locally.
A Windows PMDG purchase installed through the Operations Center cannot be uploaded to an Xbox cloud session. The aircraft must be supplied through the in-simulator Marketplace with the required Xbox entitlement, and ownership does not necessarily transfer between purchase channels. Check which PMDG products and restrictions apply on Xbox before purchasing for cloud use.
Cloud sessions also have tighter limits on flight controls, third-party utilities, external programs and manually installed liveries. They suit users prepared to use supported console controls and Marketplace content, not those building a heavily modified airliner setup.
Why is the PMDG aircraft missing or failing to load?
Most Mac-related PMDG installation failures come from mixing platforms, simulator versions or purchase channels rather than from the aircraft itself.
- The aircraft is absent from the selection screen: confirm that it was installed for the simulator version being launched and under the account that owns it.
- The installer cannot find the simulator: run it on the same Windows PC that contains the local simulator installation. An installer cannot access a cloud-console file system.
- The cockpit is blank or incomplete: update the aircraft through its original installation channel and remove manually mixed files from other simulator versions.
- Controls work on the Mac but not in the simulator: the remote or cloud service may not forward that USB device. Connect it to the Windows host or use a controller explicitly supported by the streaming service.
- An MSFS 2020 package was copied into MSFS 2024: remove it and install a version explicitly supported in MSFS 2024. Folder copying does not convert an aircraft between simulator generations.
What should you use if native Mac support is essential?
If the simulator must run directly in macOS, choose a Mac-compatible simulator and an aircraft developed for it rather than PMDG. Installing X-Plane or another native simulator does not make a PMDG aircraft purchased for Microsoft Flight Simulator compatible; our comparison of native flight simulators available for macOS explains the practical alternatives.
