How do I adjust controller and joystick sensitivity in MSFS?

To adjust controller or joystick sensitivity in Microsoft Flight Simulator, open Controls, select the correct device and active profile, then open its Sensitivity or Hardware Settings panel. Tune the response curve first, add only enough dead zone to stop drift, test in flight, and save the profile before leaving.

How should I tune the sensitivity?

  1. Select the correct device and profile. Moving a stick while watching the input indicator is the quickest way to confirm that MSFS is reading the hardware you intend to edit.
  2. Check the axis assignment. Pitch should use an elevator axis, roll an aileron axis and rudder a rudder axis. Commands such as Aileron Left or Elevator Up are digital inputs; a sensitivity curve cannot make them analogue.
  3. Start from a clean curve. Use a linear response initially, with no dead zone unless the input indicator moves while the control is physically centred.
  4. Soften the centre response. If small movements produce abrupt pitch or roll, make the curve shallower around its centre. Keep both sides symmetrical unless the hardware has genuinely unequal travel.
  5. Add the minimum dead zone required. Increase it only until centre drift or jitter disappears. A large dead zone creates a noticeable gap between moving the control and seeing a response.
  6. Check full travel. Move the control to every stop and watch the on-screen input. Use extremity dead zone only when a correctly calibrated device cannot quite reach full output.
  7. Adjust reactivity last. Lower reactivity can smooth a gamepad, but too much filtering makes the aircraft feel delayed. A joystick normally benefits from a prompt response.
  8. Save and test in flight. Use a familiar aircraft in calm weather, with the autopilot disengaged. Make one change at a time so that you can identify what improved or worsened the handling.

What are good starting settings for a gamepad or joystick?

A gamepad usually needs a softer response around the centre than a full-size joystick because the thumbsticks have very little physical travel. Begin with a modestly softened pitch-and-roll curve, keep the dead zone just above the point where drift stops, and reduce reactivity only if abrupt finger movements remain a problem.

For a joystick or yoke, begin close to linear with little or no dead zone. Soften pitch or a twist-rudder axis only if fine corrections are difficult. Throttle and mixture axes generally work best with a linear curve unless their physical endpoints fail to register. Why do my sensitivity changes have no effect?

  • The wrong profile is active. MSFS stores settings separately for each device and profile, so an edit made under another controller will not affect the one in use.
  • The control uses button commands. Replace directional commands with the corresponding analogue axis assignment.
  • Another device has a duplicate binding. A gamepad, throttle, pedals or unused joystick can fight the intended input. Search each connected device for the same axis.
  • An external hardware utility is also applying a curve. Two response curves can produce an unexpectedly aggressive or flat result. Use one layer of curve adjustment while troubleshooting.
  • The aircraft uses fly-by-wire control laws. Its computers may reshape or limit control response, so compare the setting in a simple general-aviation aircraft before assuming it failed.
  • Autopilot, assistance or trim is masking the result. Disengage automated control and return trim to a sensible position before testing.

A sensitivity curve also cannot repair a control that reports the wrong centre or never reaches its endpoints. Dead zone is suitable for slight centre jitter, not a substantial hardware offset.
