In real-world aviation, an aircraft autopilot is called “George” as an old, informal pilot nickname, not an official technical term. Its exact origin is unproven: the leading explanations connect it either to autopilot developer George De Beeson or to the phrase “let George do it”, meaning hand the job to someone else.
Where did the nickname George come from?
There is no generally accepted documentary trail identifying the first pilot to use George for an autopilot. Two explanations appear repeatedly in aviation history:

The two explanations are not necessarily incompatible: De Beeson's name may have reinforced an expression pilots already understood. The safest answer is that both are credible, but neither has a conclusive chain of contemporary evidence.
A mistake we see in historical retellings is turning the De Beeson theory into the claim that he invented the first autopilot. Lawrence Sperry had publicly demonstrated a gyroscopic automatic stabilising system in 1914, and automatic flight control developed through the work of many engineers. The nickname does not establish technical priority.
What does “George is flying” mean?
“George is flying” means the autopilot is engaged and controlling whichever lateral and vertical modes the crew has selected. George might be maintaining a heading and altitude, following a navigation route or tracking an instrument approach; the active modes determine what it is actually doing.
- Autopilot engaged: servos physically move the flight controls to follow the commanded path.
- Flight director only: guidance cues tell the pilot what control inputs to make, but the pilot is still hand-flying.
- Autothrottle only: thrust or speed automation may be active even though the autopilot is disconnected.

Is George an official aviation term?
George is cockpit slang, not a standard label, certification category or acronym. Aircraft manuals and operating procedures normally use terms such as autopilot, AP, A/P or CMD, depending on the aircraft.
The nickname is also not universal. Some pilots use it casually, others rarely hear it, and formal crew communication usually identifies the actual autopilot or mode instead.
In a flight simulator, there is no separate George function. If an instructor says to engage George, use the aircraft's autopilot control or the appropriate autopilot binding; do not search the control list for a setting named George.
Does George mean the aircraft can land itself?
No: calling the autopilot George says nothing about whether the aircraft can perform an automatic landing. Autoland requires compatible and serviceable aircraft systems, a suitable instrument approach, the required operational approval and correct crew procedures.
