Why is autopilot called George? Learn the nickname’s likely origins, what “George is flying” means, and why it does not imply autoland.
In real-world aviation, “George” is an old, informal nickname for the aircraft autopilot, not an official term or a hidden acronym. The precise origin is unproven; the two leading explanations are autopilot pioneer George De Beeson and the once-common phrase “let George do it”, meaning to delegate the work.
Why is autopilot called George?
No single origin for the autopilot nickname George has been proved by a conclusive contemporary record.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying discussions, claims that George has one certain inventor should therefore be treated cautiously. Two explanations recur in aviation histories and pilot accounts:

The explanations are not mutually exclusive. De Beeson’s name could have reinforced a phrase pilots already recognised, but the evidence does not justify presenting either story as settled fact.
George De Beeson should not be credited as the sole inventor of autopilot merely because his name appears in this story. Lawrence Sperry publicly demonstrated gyroscopic aircraft stabilisation in 1914, and practical automatic flight control emerged through the work of numerous engineers and manufacturers.
What does “George is flying the plane” mean?
“George is flying the plane” means the autopilot is engaged and controlling the aircraft according to its active lateral and vertical modes.
That might mean holding the wings level, maintaining a selected heading and altitude, following a navigation course or tracking an instrument approach. It does not tell you which of those tasks is active. On an airliner or advanced general-aviation panel, the flight-mode annunciations are the reliable source.

- Flight director only: guidance bars show the pilot what inputs to make, but the pilot is still hand-flying.
- Autothrottle only: thrust or speed automation may be operating while the autopilot remains disconnected.
The phrase does not mean that responsibility has passed to another pilot. The flight crew selects and monitors the modes, checks the resulting flight path and disconnects the automation when necessary.
Is George an official aviation term or acronym?
George is aviation slang for the autopilot, not an official system name, certification category or acronym.
“Automatic pilot” is the older expanded wording from which autopilot is formed. Aircraft manuals and cockpit labels generally use terms such as AP, A/P, CMD, AP 1 or AP 2, depending on the aircraft.
The nickname is not universal. Some pilots use it regularly, while others seldom hear it; formal crew calls usually identify the actual autopilot channel or flight mode. When somebody jokes that “his name is George”, they are personifying the automation—there is no human or digital pilot by that name hidden in the system.
Does George control the flight plan, take-off and landing?
The name George describes the autopilot generally; it says nothing about which phases of flight that particular system can perform.
Does George create or follow the flight plan?
The autopilot may follow navigation guidance generated from a programmed route, but it does not normally create that route. Even with a route loaded, George will not necessarily follow it. The correct navigation source must be selected, an appropriate lateral mode must be armed or active, and the intended flight-plan leg must be valid.
Can George fly the take-off?
In normal operations, most take-offs are hand-flown while the flight director and thrust automation may provide assistance. Does George mean the aircraft can land itself?
No. An autopilot that can track an approach is not automatically capable of controlling the flare, touchdown and rollout.
Autoland requires compatible and serviceable aircraft equipment, the correct approach and ground facilities, appropriate operational approval and precise crew procedures. Where is George in a flight simulator?
There is no separate George control in a flight simulator; use the aircraft’s autopilot master, command button or assigned autopilot binding.
If an instructor or checklist says to “engage George”, do not search the controls for that name. Look for an AP, A/P or CMD control, then verify the engagement and active modes on the cockpit display.
What should you check when George will not work?
- Confirm engagement: flight-director bars or an illuminated heading button do not necessarily mean the autopilot itself is on. Check the autopilot annunciation.
- Stabilise and trim the aircraft: many systems reject engagement outside defined pitch, bank or airspeed limits. Large control forces can also cause an immediate disconnect.
- Check the active mode: heading mode will not follow the programmed route, and altitude hold will not climb to a newly selected altitude without a suitable climb mode.
- Verify the navigation source: route following requires the intended GPS, flight-management or radio-navigation source, plus a valid active leg.
- Inspect controller assignments: duplicate bindings, a held disconnect switch or noisy pitch and roll axes can disconnect or fight the autopilot. Complex simulated aircraft may also require their cockpit controls rather than a generic simulator shortcut.
If George is engaged but the aircraft is doing something unexpected, read the active mode annunciations before changing more controls. The displayed mode—not the nickname—is the authoritative description of what the autopilot is commanding.
