What is the best Airbus A320 add-on for FSX?

In short

Find the best Airbus A320 add-on for FSX and Steam Edition, with our top freeware pick, alternatives, compatibility advice and common fixes.

For most FSX and FSX: Steam Edition users, our best freeware Airbus A320 pick is the Airbus A320 with FD-FMC and VC. It combines an integrated flight-management computer, SID/STAR support, a usable virtual cockpit and Airbus-style managed and selected modes, giving it more operational depth than simpler freeware packages.

We recommend it for simmers who want to programme routes and practise Airbus-style autopilot operation without buying a commercial aircraft. You can download the FD-FMC A320 package from our library.

Why is the FD-FMC A320 our top choice?

The FD-FMC A320 offers the strongest balance of cockpit functionality, flight planning and accessibility among the freeware FSX options we recommend.

  • Integrated FMC: It supports route programming and SID/STAR procedures rather than relying solely on the basic FSX GPS.
  • Virtual cockpit: The package is suitable for normal cockpit flying rather than external-view use alone.
  • Airbus-style automation: Managed and selected modes make it more useful for learning A320 speed, heading and altitude control.
  • Complete freeware package: It provides substantially more operational depth than a basic visual model or repaint.

That extra functionality creates a steeper learning curve. Read the included documentation and learn which controls engage managed or selected modes; treating the panel like a Boeing-style autopilot is a common cause of unexpected speed and heading behaviour.

Which FSX Airbus A320 should you choose?

Choose the FD-FMC aircraft for route and cockpit operation, but select a simpler package if easy installation or basic hand-flying matters more than systems depth.

FD-FMC A320 with VCFMC programming, SID/STAR procedures and Airbus-style automationMore setup and cockpit learning

If “best” means a full study-level simulation, the FD-FMC package is not that. Specialist commercial aircraft may reproduce more electrical, hydraulic, ECAM and flight-control logic, but buyers must verify that a product explicitly supports FSX rather than only Prepar3D or newer Microsoft Flight Simulator platforms.

Does this A320 work in FSX: Steam Edition?

The FD-FMC A320 can generally be used in FSX: Steam Edition, although its installation location may differ from boxed FSX and older gauges can require additional attention.

Steam installations still use the familiar SimObjects\Airplanes structure. The main trap is copying the aircraft into an inactive boxed-FSX folder, especially on a computer where both editions have been installed. Our FSX: Steam Edition compatibility guidance covers installation paths and the conflicts caused by having both editions present.

What installation problems should you check?

Most failed A320 installations come from an incorrect folder level or from copying the aircraft while omitting its supplied gauges, effects or other shared files.

  1. Extract the archive first. Do not try to run the aircraft from inside the compressed download.
  2. Read the package instructions. Their folder layout takes priority over generic FSX installation advice.
  3. Check the aircraft folder. The final aircraft directory under SimObjects\Airplanes should contain aircraft.cfg; an extra nested folder prevents FSX from finding it.
  4. Copy supporting components. If the package supplies separate Gauges, Effects or other folders, merge their contents into the corresponding FSX folders without discarding unrelated files.
  5. Restart FSX and test the cockpit. Approve module or gauge prompts only when they belong to the trusted package you installed.

If the aircraft appears but the FMC or panel remains blank, first check for missed gauge files and an incorrect folder structure. If cockpit graphics fail under FSX's optional DX10 Preview mode, test with that preview disabled before changing the aircraft configuration.

Is the freeware A320 study-level?

No; it is a feature-rich freeware A320, not a complete simulation of every real aircraft system and protection law.

It is well suited to learning route entry, SID and STAR selection, flight-director use and managed versus selected automation. Do not assume that every ECAM message, failure mode, navigation-data behaviour or electrical and hydraulic path exactly matches the real A320.
