What order should a DCS beginner practise in?

The fastest training sequence is basic aircraft control, circuits, navigation, one sensor or weapon at a time, and only then a complete mission.

  1. Stay with one aircraft. Changing modules constantly resets your cockpit knowledge and muscle memory. The free TF-51D is useful for manual flying and clickable-cockpit practice, while the free Su-25T introduces combat systems without a clickable cockpit.   2. Clean up the controls. DCS often assigns pitch, roll, rudder or throttle axes to several connected devices. Remove duplicate axis bindings, then bind trim, brakes, views and the module’s essential sensor or weapon controls. Bindings are aircraft-specific.
  3. Complete the interactive lessons. Run one lesson, repeat it without prompts if possible, and consult the manual whenever the reason for a switch position is unclear. Do not try to memorise an entire start-up sequence on the first attempt.
  4. Fly a hot-start circuit. Practise taxiing, take-off, trimming, a visual circuit and landing in calm daylight. Cold starts can wait until basic handling no longer consumes all your attention.
  5. Add navigation. Fly between two or three waypoints, return to the departure airfield and land. This exposes problems with displays, radios and situational awareness without combat pressure.
  6. Train one system per sortie. Use an unarmed stationary target for guns, then practise a single weapon or sensor mode. Complex HOTAS aircraft need a deliberate progression; our module-specific A-10C practice plan shows how to divide one demanding aircraft into manageable skills.
  7. Introduce threats gradually. Begin with a non-manoeuvring target, then an opponent with reduced skill, short-range air defences and finally a realistic mixed-threat mission. Starting against advanced fighters or dense surface-to-air defences teaches frantic button pressing rather than correct procedure.

Where are DCS training missions and manuals stored?

DCS World provides lessons through its Training section, quick scenarios through Instant Action, and longer sorties through the mission and campaign browsers.

Most installed aircraft manuals can also be found inside the simulator installation under a path resembling Mods\aircraft\<module>\Doc. The exact module folder varies, and some aircraft supply extra checklists or guides alongside the main PDF.

Downloaded .miz files are best kept in the simulator’s folder beneath Saved Games, commonly under Saved Games\DCS\Missions. Older installations may retain a branch-specific DCS folder name. Keeping user missions outside the core installation prevents an update or repair from removing them.

How do you make a useful DCS practice mission?

A useful practice mission removes every variable except the skill being trained and can be reset quickly after a mistake.

  1. Add your aircraft and set it as the player aircraft for solo practice or a client slot for multiplayer use.
  2. Choose a simple start state. Use an airborne or hot parking start for systems and weapons practice; use a cold start only when start-up itself is the lesson.
  3. Set forgiving conditions. Select daylight, good visibility and light wind until basic flying is consistent.
  4. Create a short route. Two or three waypoints and a nearby diversion airfield are enough for most drills.
  5. Add passive targets first. Use unarmed ground units or a non-aggressive aircraft before adding manoeuvring opponents and air defences.
  6. Permit training aids if needed. Unlimited fuel, unlimited weapons, labels or invulnerability can shorten repetitive practice, but mission options may override personal gameplay settings. Remove each aid once it stops serving a clear purpose.
  7. Save separate versions. Keep basic, intermediate and threat-enabled copies instead of rebuilding the same scenario every time.

Why does a downloaded training mission not work?

Most failed DCS training missions are caused by missing dependencies, incorrect file handling, conflicting controls or an older scripted lesson that no longer matches the module.

  • The mission does not appear: if the download is an archive containing a .miz file, extract that file first. Do not unpack the .miz itself; DCS needs it intact.
  • The mission will not load: confirm that you own and have installed its required terrain. Additional aircraft and asset dependencies may also prevent the scenario from working as intended.
  • You cannot occupy the aircraft: the mission may use a module you do not own, or the aircraft slot may not have been configured for a player or client.
  • A training prompt will not advance: scripted lessons can wait for an exact switch position or control input. Return the control to its original state and repeat the requested action rather than clicking ahead rapidly.
  • The aircraft moves unexpectedly: inspect the axis assignments for every connected controller. Duplicate pitch, roll, rudder and throttle bindings are a common cause.
  • An old lesson behaves differently: avionics, weapon logic and artificial intelligence can change between simulator updates. Prefer a maintained mission written for the aircraft’s present systems, and use the module manual to verify the procedure.

Recorded track files can also diverge from the original flight, especially after simulator changes or in complicated missions. Treat them as demonstrations rather than dependable interactive training; a purpose-built .miz mission is usually the better practice tool.
