Fix DCS World mods not working: check Saved Games paths, folder nesting, dependencies, update compatibility, logs and multiplayer checks.
DCS World mods usually fail because they are in the wrong Saved Games profile, nested one folder too deep, missing a dependency, incompatible with the installed DCS build, or conflicting with another add-on. Check the mod’s folder structure first, then isolate it and read dcs.log for the exact loading error.
How do I fix a DCS mod that is not loading?
A clean one-mod test separates a bad installation from a damaged DCS setup.
- Read the mod’s installation instructions. Confirm that it supports your DCS build and that you own or have installed any aircraft, asset pack or framework it requires. Some community aircraft depend on another flyable module.
- Find the active Saved Games profile. It is commonly
Saved Games\DCSor a similarly named DCS folder such asDCS.openbeta. Launch DCS once and check which folder receives a newly updatedLogs\dcs.log; that is safer than guessing. - Check the folder depth. For a typical aircraft mod, DCS should find something resembling
Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\ModName\entry.lua. A path such asModName\ModName\entry.luais double-nested and will normally be ignored. - Extract the complete archive. Do not leave the mod inside a ZIP or copy only its visible aircraft folder if the package also contains scripts, dependencies or shared assets. Check that security software has not quarantined a required file, but do not disable protection broadly.
- Test the mod by itself. Move other add-ons out of the active
Modsfolder, then install only the problem mod and its documented dependencies. If it loads, restore the others in small groups until the conflict returns. - Inspect the log. Open
Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.logafter reproducing the problem. Search for the mod’s folder name,ERROR, Lua failures, missing files and dependency names.
Our DCS mod folder and installation guide covers the full directory structure and the double-nesting mistakes we see most often.
Where should DCS World mods be installed?
Most community mods belong in the active DCS folder under Windows Saved Games, not inside the main simulator installation.
| Mod type | Typical Saved Games location | Frequent mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Community aircraft | Mods\aircraft\ModName | Putting it directly in Mods or adding an extra folder level |
| Ground, naval or shared assets | Mods\tech\ModName | Installing an asset dependency as an aircraft |
| Liveries | Liveries\ExactAircraftFolder\LiveryName | Using the display name instead of the required internal aircraft folder name |
| Hook or export scripts | A documented location under Scripts | Copying only the mod’s Mods folder and omitting its scripts |
Saved Games can be relocated by Windows, and the profile name can vary. Steam and standalone DCS follow the same general Saved Games principle, so a Steam installation does not automatically mean community mods belong under steamapps.
Some older or replacement mods explicitly modify the DCS installation directory. Follow their documentation, but understand that an update or repair can overwrite those files. Do not move a Saved Games mod into the installation directory merely because DCS failed to detect it.
What does the failure symptom tell me?
The way a mod fails usually points to the right part of the installation.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears in DCS | Wrong profile, wrong category or double-nested folder | Locate entry.lua and confirm which profile writes the latest log |
| Aircraft appears but is not flyable | Missing dependency, AI-only mod or incompatible scripts | Read the documentation and the related log entries |
| Unit is absent from the Mission Editor | Wrong unit category, country, coalition, mission date or historical filter | Search the appropriate aircraft, vehicle, ship or static-object list |
| Model or textures are missing | Incomplete extraction, missing asset pack or livery for a different variant | Reinstall from a clean archive without merging it over an older copy |
| DCS crashes during start-up | Broken Lua, incompatible binary or conflict with another add-on | Remove all mods, reproduce the crash and inspect dcs.log |
| Works offline but not online | Server integrity rules or mismatched required mods | Use the server’s permitted and required mod set |
Community mods also do not necessarily appear in DCS Module Manager. Depending on the add-on, the correct place to look may be the Mission Editor, aircraft selection screen, installed liveries or a mission supplied with the package.
Why did the mod stop working after a DCS update?
A DCS update can expose outdated Lua code, change an interface used by the mod or invalidate a compiled component even when the files remain in place.
Install a release that explicitly supports your DCS build. Remove the old mod folder before copying in its replacement; extracting over an existing version can preserve obsolete files that the author deliberately removed. Our guide to checking mod compatibility after DCS updates explains how to distinguish an outdated mod from an installation error.
Why does a DCS mod work in single-player but not multiplayer?
Multiplayer servers can enforce integrity checks and their own permitted-mod rules, so a locally working add-on may still be rejected online.
A mission may also require the server and participating clients to have matching assets. Use the mod versions specified by the server administrator and remove client modifications that fail its integrity policy; there is no legitimate local setting that forces a restricted mod through the check.
Will repairing DCS fix broken mods?
A repair fixes altered or missing files in the main DCS installation, but it normally does not repair community content under Saved Games.
Use a repair when a mod changed core simulator files or DCS remains broken after all Saved Games mods and scripts have been disabled. Follow our instructions to repair the DCS installation safely; be prepared for repaired files to replace core modifications.
If DCS still crashes with every community add-on removed, the fault is no longer isolated to that mod. Continue with the broader DCS crash, freeze and loading checklist, which covers repairs, logs and testing with a clean user profile.
