Get the best MSFS 2024 PS5 graphics and performance settings for VRR, 4K output, traffic, HDR and smoother flying around busy airports.
For the best balance in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5, select Performance mode if a graphics preset is offered, leave PS5 resolution and 120 Hz output on Automatic, enable VRR on a compatible display, use the TV’s Game Mode, and reduce aircraft and airport traffic before sacrificing scenery or live weather.
Recommended MSFS 2024 PS5 settings
MSFS 2024 on PS5 uses a console-tuned, largely fixed graphics profile rather than the long list of PC controls. Do not copy PC values for render scaling, Terrain Level of Detail, anti-aliasing or frame generation; our comparison of PS5 and high-end PC rendering explains why their tuning options differ.
| Setting | Recommended value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics preset | Performance, if offered | Provides steadier motion at complex airports. Use Quality only when it remains smooth in demanding flights. |
| PS5 resolution | Automatic | Allows correct 4K output on a 4K display without assuming the simulator renders every frame internally at 4K. |
| VRR | Automatic | Reduces visible judder and tearing on a compatible HDMI display when frame rate varies. |
| 120 Hz Output | Automatic | Permits supported presentation modes but does not make the simulator run at 120 fps. |
| HDR | On When Supported | Preserves cloud and lighting range on a properly calibrated HDR display without being a meaningful performance setting. |
| TV or monitor mode | Game Mode | Reduces display latency and normally disables unnecessary video processing. |
| Aircraft and ground traffic | Low to medium | Busy airports are often limited by traffic simulation rather than output resolution. |
| Online scenery and photogrammetry | On | These provide the expected world detail. Disable them temporarily only when diagnosing streaming problems. |
If no Quality or Performance selector appears in your installed build, the simulator is managing its console profile automatically. There is no hidden PS5 equivalent of the PC graphics menu.
Should I use Quality or Performance mode?
Performance mode is the better default for normal flying, especially with glass-cockpit aircraft, live traffic, detailed airports or heavy cloud. Quality mode suits scenic flying and screenshots when frame pacing remains even.
Test the choice at a large detailed airport with the aircraft, weather and traffic you normally use. A quiet rural runway in clear weather is not a useful stress test. Switch to Performance if panning becomes uneven, controller response feels delayed or an approach develops sustained judder.
What should I use on PS5 Pro?
Use the same starting settings on PS5 Pro, then try Quality mode if it is available. The Pro’s additional graphics capacity can help image quality, but it cannot remove every CPU, traffic, data-streaming or airport-scenery bottleneck; keep Performance mode for the heaviest locations if it feels steadier.
Which settings fix stutters and FPS drops?
Reduce traffic first when performance deteriorates near large airports. Consistently heavy motion points towards traffic or rendering load, while terrain that stays blurry or arrives in chunks more often indicates a network or cache problem.
- Create a repeatable test. Use the same aircraft, gate, weather and camera view after each change.
- Lower airport activity. Reduce ground aircraft, airport vehicles and road traffic before changing scenery quality.
- Isolate online traffic. Temporarily disable live traffic or multiplayer aircraft. If the stutter disappears, restore only the service you value most.
- Check scenery streaming. Prefer wired Ethernet where practical. If a Rolling Cache option is present and repeated areas begin loading incorrectly, clear and rebuild that cache rather than deleting the entire simulator save or control profile.
- Test simpler weather. Dense layered cloud can expose a graphics bottleneck. Use a lighter preset for comparison, but retain live weather if it runs acceptably.
- Change the graphics mode last. Select Performance after traffic and streaming checks if the build offers that choice.
Approach-specific pauses have additional causes, including newly loaded airport detail and arriving traffic; our targeted fixes for landing and airport stutters cover those symptoms without repeating the general setup.
Should I lower PS5 output from 4K to 1080p?
No—forcing the PS5 to output 1080p usually does not make MSFS 2024 render substantially faster. The simulator controls its internal resolution and dynamic scaling, while the console’s output setting mainly determines the signal sent to the display.
Leave Resolution on Automatic and use 1080p only to solve display, receiver or capture-device compatibility problems. Our flight-simulator resolution and VRR guidance explains the difference between internal rendering and the final video signal.
What TV or monitor settings should I use?
A correctly configured display improves clarity and response without changing the simulator’s actual rendering workload.
- Enable Game Mode or allow PS5’s Automatic Low Latency Mode to select it.
- Disable motion interpolation, frame smoothing and other television-generated motion effects.
- Turn off overscan so the complete cockpit image is shown pixel for pixel.
- Keep excessive sharpness and noise reduction disabled; both can make instruments and distant scenery look artificial.
- Calibrate HDR through the PS5 system screens. If clouds lose all highlight detail or night scenes look grey, correct HDR and black-level matching before changing simulator brightness.
- If VRR causes flicker, first disable Apply to Unsupported Games in the PS5 video settings and retest before turning VRR off completely.

Common PS5 graphics-setting mistakes
- Assuming 120 Hz means 120 fps: it only enables a compatible output mode; the simulator still determines the rendered frame rate.
- Forcing 1080p for extra performance: this can soften the output without reducing the internal workload.
- Maxing every traffic slider: aircraft, service vehicles and road traffic can combine into a severe airport bottleneck.
- Disabling online scenery as a general FPS fix: this sacrifices world detail and helps mainly when streaming is the actual fault.
- Deleting all saved data to repair a cache: remove only the rolling scenery cache when corruption is suspected, preserving control assignments and profile data.
- Copying PC setting guides literally: PS5 does not expose the same render-scale, level-of-detail and upscaling controls.
