What are the best MSFS 2024 settings for an RTX 3060?

Ian Stephens
In short

Use these MSFS 2024 RTX 3060 settings for smoother 1080p or 1440p flying, with exact DLSS, LOD, cloud, texture and traffic choices.

For an RTX 3060, run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 at 1080p with TAA or DLSS Quality, or 1440p with DLSS Quality/Balanced. Start with High settings, Terrain LOD 100–150, Object LOD 100, High clouds and Medium shadows/reflections. Target a stable 30–45 fps rather than an unstable 60 fps.

This baseline is intended for the common desktop RTX 3060 with 12 GB of VRAM. An RTX 3060 Laptop GPU or an 8 GB desktop model needs a few reductions, covered below. These recommendations are for monitor use rather than VR.

The best starting point is a customised High preset, retaining image-critical settings while reducing effects that consume disproportionate GPU or CPU time.

Bloom, lens flare and light shafts can be set according to taste; they are not where we would seek the first large performance saving. Our broader breakdown of MSFS graphics options explains the visual cost of settings not listed in the table.

Should an RTX 3060 use TAA or DLSS in MSFS 2024?

Use TAA at 1080p when cockpit displays and fine scenery detail matter most; use DLSS Quality when the GPU cannot maintain the desired frame rate. TAA at 100% render scale usually produces clearer instruments at 1080p, while DLSS can introduce softness or ghosting around moving display symbology.

At 1440p, DLSS Quality is the better default because it has more source information from which to reconstruct the image. Move to Balanced only after lowering clouds, reflections and shadows fails to provide enough headroom. Avoid combining a heavily reduced render scale with DLSS, as the resulting internal resolution is too low for stable fine detail.

NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation requires newer RTX hardware and is not available on the RTX 3060. DLSS Super Resolution does work. If TAA shimmers or DLSS makes instruments difficult to read, use our anti-aliasing fixes for shimmering edges and cockpit text before sacrificing more performance.

Which settings should I lower first?

The correct settings depend on whether the flight is limited by the RTX 3060, the processor or available VRAM.

  1. Identify the bottleneck. If reducing resolution or changing from TAA to DLSS raises the frame rate, the GPU is probably limiting performance. If GPU usage remains below its normal maximum and resolution changes achieve little, suspect the main thread, traffic or scenery complexity. Our method for separating GPU, CPU and traffic bottlenecks covers this diagnosis in more detail.
  2. For a GPU limit, reduce Volumetric Clouds from High to Medium, followed by ambient occlusion, reflections, contact shadows and shadow quality. Change DLSS Quality to Balanced only after those adjustments.
  3. For a main-thread limit, lower Terrain LOD towards 80–100, Objects LOD towards 80, then reduce live or AI aircraft, airport vehicles and worker density. Complex glass cockpits can also benefit from a lower display refresh setting.
  4. For VRAM pressure, reduce Texture Resolution from High to Medium. Sudden severe stutters after changing view at a detailed airport are more suggestive of memory pressure than a merely low average frame rate.
  5. Retest the same demanding flight. Use a complex aircraft, a large airport and cloud cover rather than tuning over empty countryside. Change one group of settings at a time so the result remains clear.

Why does MSFS 2024 still stutter with these settings?

Stuttering can persist because not every pause is caused by the RTX 3060. Scenery streaming, add-on airports, traffic, processor load, VRAM exhaustion and laptop thermal limits can all produce uneven frame delivery.

A locked 30 fps often feels better than repeated movement between 35 and 55 fps, particularly without a variable-refresh display. Use either the simulator or driver limiter, not several competing caps, and consult our driver-level frame-cap and V-Sync guidance before overriding anti-aliasing or power settings in the NVIDIA profile.

If pauses coincide with new scenery appearing, test the internet connection and rolling cache before lowering image quality. After a graphics-driver change, allow shader-related stuttering to settle before judging the profile. Testing once with third-party scenery and traffic disabled also reveals whether an add-on, rather than the graphics preset, is responsible.

What should RTX 3060 laptop users change?

An RTX 3060 Laptop GPU should start at 1080p because its power limit and 6 GB VRAM allocation can make it substantially slower than the 12 GB desktop card.

  • Use DLSS Quality, switching to Balanced only when necessary.
  • Set Texture Resolution to Medium if detailed airports cause view-change stutters.
  • Start with Terrain LOD 100 and Objects LOD 80–100.
  • Use Medium or High clouds, Medium shadows and Low or Medium reflections.
  • Run from mains power, select the laptop's performance mode and use the dedicated GPU where the system provides that choice.
  • Check temperatures and clock speeds if performance deteriorates during a long flight; graphics reductions cannot correct sustained thermal throttling.

For both desktop and laptop cards, preserve textures and instrument clarity until the evidence points to VRAM pressure. Clouds, reflections, shadows, LOD and traffic usually offer cleaner performance gains than making the whole image blurry.
