The right FSX weather add-on depends on whether you want live atmospheric data, better-looking clouds or weather that remains identical each time you fly a scenario.

All of these are products from the FSX era. Before buying legacy software, confirm that its installer, activation system and online data functions remain available for the exact edition you use. Existing owners should retain their installers and licence details.

Active Sky 2016: best overall weather engine

Active Sky 2016 for FSX is the strongest choice for airline, IFR and longer cross-country flying because it manages the atmosphere rather than merely replacing cloud images. It can build conditions from weather reports, model winds aloft, smooth transitions and provide flight-planning and briefing information.

Its radar and mapping functions do not automatically put working weather radar into every aircraft. The aircraft, panel or gauge needs compatible integration. Active Sky products are also simulator-specific, so a similarly named edition intended for another platform is not automatically an FSX licence.

FSXWX: best free weather engine

FSXWX is the practical no-cost choice when the main requirement is real-world weather injection rather than an extensive briefing suite. It adds changing station conditions and broader atmospheric data to FSX without requiring a paid weather package.

REX Soft Clouds and REX4: visual weather versus weather control

REX Soft Clouds changes FSX's cloud textures, giving its billboard-style clouds different shapes and softer artwork. It does not set wind, pressure, visibility, precipitation or cloud bases, so installing it alone will not add real weather.

The name REX4 covers products with different jobs. REX4 texture packages alter environmental artwork, while REX4 Weather Architect creates controlled weather plans. Weather Architect is useful for repeatable crosswind approaches, storm-avoidance practice and flights where conditions must progress in a planned way rather than follow a live report.

Which FSX weather add-on should I choose?

Choose the programme according to the data and control you need, not the screenshots on the product page.

• Serious live IFR or airline flying: use Active Sky 2016 for FSX, provided you can obtain and activate the correct legacy edition.
• Free real-world weather: use FSXWX with the default FSX clouds first. Add replacement textures only if you dislike their appearance.
• Better-looking clouds only: use REX Soft Clouds or an appropriate REX4 texture package without changing your existing weather source.
• Repeatable training scenarios: use REX4 Weather Architect or FSX's manual weather controls rather than a live injector.
• Offline flying: use saved or manually authored weather, because live engines depend on access to weather data and, in some cases, activation services.

A mistake we see constantly is treating a METAR injector and a cloud package as equivalent. A METAR describes conditions reported at a station—typically surface wind, visibility, cloud layers, temperature, dew point and pressure. A full weather engine must also decide what happens between stations and above the surface.

Can I get FSX real weather free?

Yes: FSXWX provides free real-weather injection, while FSX's own legacy internet-weather service may fail when the external service on which it depends is unavailable.

Installing an FSXWX download for FSX safely

An FSXWX download must match FSX or FSX: Steam Edition and include the connection requirements specified for that build.

1. Verify the package identity. Obtain the original FSXWX client from an authorised distribution point. Do not substitute FSrealWX or a package intended for another simulator because the name looks similar.
2. Install the required connector. FSXWX builds for FSX have traditionally used FSUIPC, while other engines may use SimConnect. Follow the requirements supplied with the exact build rather than adding unrelated DLL files to FSX.
3. Load a flight in FSX. Start the simulator, position the aircraft and allow the flight to finish loading before asking the external programme to connect.
4. Connect the weather client. Confirm that it identifies FSX and begins downloading data. Disable any second injector and do not leave FSX's internet-weather updates competing with it.
5. Check a nearby reporting station. Compare pressure, wind and cloud bases with the displayed METAR, remembering that the report uses UTC and may come from the nearest airport rather than the exact point beneath the aircraft.

Can I combine a weather engine with REX Soft Clouds?

Yes: one weather engine can control atmospheric conditions while one compatible texture package supplies the cloud artwork FSX renders.

• Run only one injector: Active Sky and FSXWX should not control the same flight together. They will repeatedly overwrite wind, pressure, visibility and cloud layers.
• Close FSX before changing textures: open texture files may be locked or only partly replaced.
• Keep a default-texture backup: use the package's restore function where one is supplied.
• Watch the installation order: installing REX4 textures after Soft Clouds may overwrite the Soft Clouds files, and the reverse can also happen.
• Do not expect volumetric clouds: replacement artwork can improve FSX's cloud sprites, but it cannot replace the simulator's underlying cloud-rendering system.

FSX: Steam Edition compatibility

Weather add-ons can work with FSX: Steam Edition only when the particular build recognises that edition and connects to the correct installation.

The most troublesome arrangement is boxed FSX and Steam Edition installed on the same computer. Legacy installers may detect the wrong fsx.exe, registry entry, configuration location or SimConnect installation. Check the selected path rather than accepting it automatically.

Active Sky normally communicates through SimConnect, while FSXWX has traditionally relied on FSUIPC for its FSX connection. If an injector remains at “waiting for simulator” or similar wording, confirm that the required connector is installed for the edition actually running. Keeping FSX and the weather programme at the same Windows privilege level can also prevent connection problems.

Why is my FSX weather add-on not working?

Most FSX weather failures are caused by competing injectors, a missing connection component, the wrong simulator path or confusion between weather data and cloud textures.

1. No weather appears: confirm that the programme reports a connection to FSX, has internet access and is not blocked from making local or external connections by security software.
2. The weather does not match: check the reporting station, METAR timestamp and simulator date. A station can be missing or stale, and historical mode may have been selected accidentally.
3. Conditions change slowly: transition or smoothing settings deliberately prevent an instant jump to each new report. Constantly forcing refreshes can produce more abrupt wind and pressure changes.
4. Wind shifts are excessive: ensure only one engine is active and use that engine's wind-smoothing controls where available. FSX itself can react badly to large wind changes between layers.
5. Soft Clouds changes nothing about the weather: this is expected. It replaces textures but does not inject pressure, wind, rain or cloud coverage.
6. Clouds are black, square or missing: restore the default textures with FSX closed, then reinstall only the intended texture set into the correct simulator installation.

Clouds, FPS and out-of-memory errors

Dense cloud layers and high-resolution textures usually cost more performance than the external weather programme running beside FSX.

Reduce cloud draw distance first, followed by cloud coverage density or the number of layers requested by the engine. If the problem remains, use lower-resolution cloud textures. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition are 32-bit applications, so complex aircraft, detailed scenery and large cloud textures can also increase virtual-address-space pressure and contribute to out-of-memory errors.

Our practical recommendation: use Active Sky 2016 alone for the most complete FSX weather system, or FSXWX with the default clouds for a free setup. Add REX Soft Clouds only for different cloud artwork, and choose Weather Architect when repeatability matters more than live conditions.
