Live weather works through built-in systems in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane 12 and FlightGear, or through version-specific PC engines including ActiveSky, REX Weather Force, xEnviro and FSrealWX. No single program supports every simulator, and running two weather injectors together causes conflicts.
Which live weather program works with my simulator?
Compatibility is determined by the exact simulator version, operating system and platform—not simply by the product family named on the installer.

Does ActiveSky work with MSFS 2024?
Yes, ActiveSky FS works with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Windows when using a release explicitly carrying MSFS 2024 support.
The name matters: ActiveSky FS is the MSFS product, while Active Sky XP, ActiveSky P3D and older FSX editions are separate programs. An ActiveSky licence or installer for one simulator does not grant technical compatibility with another.
ActiveSky FS is not an Xbox or PlayStation application. On those platforms, MSFS 2024 Live Weather is the practical live-weather source. Which REX weather product works with MSFS?
REX Weather Force 2020 is the REX live-weather engine associated with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on Windows; its name should not be treated as a promise of MSFS 2024 compatibility.
REX Sky Force 3D is a different product for supported FSX and Prepar3D versions, combining weather-engine and visual functions. It is not the MSFS edition. A mistake we see constantly is treating “REX Weather” as one interchangeable program when the individual REX products target different simulator families.
Does xEnviro work with X-Plane 12?
Yes, xEnviro works with X-Plane 12 when the installed xEnviro build explicitly lists XP12 support.
xEnviro is more than a simple METAR injector: it controls weather generation and much of the atmospheric depiction. That makes its visual behaviour and performance impact different from X-Plane 12's native real weather or ActiveSky XP 12. Do not run xEnviro alongside another active weather engine.
- Choose X-Plane 12 real weather for the simplest setup and the closest integration with the simulator's own weather system.
- Choose ActiveSky XP 12 when its weather planning, control and transition features are the priority.
- Choose xEnviro for XP12 when you specifically want its combined weather and atmospheric rendering, after confirming operating-system and graphics compatibility.
What about FSrealWX and FS Global Real Weather?
FSrealWX and FS Global Real Weather are separate external engines primarily encountered in FS2004, FSX, Prepar3D and older X-Plane installations.
FSrealWX remains useful as a free option where its particular build, weather feed and simulator connector still work. It is most relevant to older simulators that no longer have a dependable built-in online weather service. FS Global Real Weather, usually shortened to FSGRW, also has simulator-specific editions and compatibility limits. Do not assume that an edition used with FSX, Prepar3D or X-Plane 11 will work with X-Plane 12, a later Prepar3D release or either version of MSFS.
With either legacy engine, an installer opening successfully proves very little. Confirm that the program downloads a fresh, time-stamped report, establishes a simulator connection and then changes the actual wind, pressure and visibility. FSrealWX can display weather data while injection is failing because its connector is missing or mismatched.
Is a weather engine the same as a cloud add-on?
No. A weather engine obtains observations and forecast data, interprets them and supplies conditions to the simulator; a cloud add-on may only change textures, lighting or atmospheric rendering.
Some products combine both jobs. xEnviro includes weather and atmospheric depiction, while REX Sky Force 3D combines functions for its supported simulators. A cloud texture pack, weather preset or shader modification cannot follow real-world conditions unless it also contains a working live-weather engine.
Which live weather option should I choose?
Use the simulator's built-in weather first when it offers global real weather and meets your needs; add an external engine only for a feature the native system lacks.
- MSFS 2024 on Xbox or PlayStation: use built-in Live Weather because Windows companion injectors cannot run on those consoles.
- MSFS 2020 or 2024 on PC: start with Live Weather; consider ActiveSky FS for its separate weather interface and additional control. Weather Force 2020 is an MSFS 2020-specific alternative, not a generic REX engine for both releases.
- X-Plane 12: start with native real weather. Use ActiveSky XP 12 or xEnviro only when their particular planning, transition or rendering features are wanted.
- FSX: use a compatible external engine because the original online service is no longer dependable.
- Prepar3D: choose by exact P3D major version. A connector made for another release may appear to connect yet fail to inject weather properly.
- Historical flying: select an engine and edition that explicitly provides archived weather. Changing the simulator's date does not turn a live METAR feed into historical weather.
How do I prevent two weather programs from conflicting?
Give control of the flight to one weather source and disable every competing injector.
- Match the exact platform: verify the simulator name, major version, operating system and PC-versus-console requirement before installing anything.
- Install the correct bridge: older Microsoft-based simulators may require a matching SimConnect or other interface component, while X-Plane products normally use a plug-in. Do not reuse a connector merely because its name looks familiar.
- Select one source: turn off native live updates while an external engine is injecting unless that product's instructions explicitly require them. Do not run ActiveSky, REX, xEnviro, FSrealWX or FSGRW against each other.
- Use the required starting weather mode: some injectors take control from a named preset; others connect directly. Do not assume that Clear Skies or Live Weather is always the correct starting selection.
- Check date and time: live weather normally represents real-world conditions around the latest observation time. Use an engine's historical function if you are flying on another date and want a valid comparison.
- Verify the injection: compare the engine's displayed station report with the simulator's surface wind, pressure and visibility. Check winds aloft after departure as well; matching QNH at the airport does not prove that the full forecast loaded.
Why does simulator weather differ from the METAR?
A small difference is normal because a METAR is a time-stamped observation at one station, not a complete model of the surrounding atmosphere.
The weather engine may blend neighbouring stations, smooth a transition or combine METAR observations with forecast data for cloud structure and upper winds. The simulator must then translate reported layers and visibility into its own atmospheric model, so cloud coverage will not always be literal.
- Conditions are several hours old: inspect the report timestamp and force a refresh. The station or data source may not have issued a newer observation.
- Weather keeps resetting: another injector or the simulator's native live-weather system is still active.
- The program says connected but nothing changes: check that weather injection is enabled and that the correct connector or plug-in has loaded.
- Pressure is right but clouds are missing: the program may be in briefing-only mode, or the renderer may not be translating the reported layers as expected.
- No simulator connection: check security software, local network permissions and mismatched administrator privileges between the simulator and weather program.
- Clouds redraw abruptly: increase transition or smoothing settings if the engine provides them, accepting that stronger smoothing delays newly reported conditions.
