Which live weather programs work with flight simulators?

Live weather works through built-in systems in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024, X-Plane 12 and FlightGear, or external engines such as ActiveSky, REX weather products, xEnviro and FSrealWX. Compatibility is version-specific: no single program supports every simulator, and only one weather injector should control a flight at a time.

Which live weather program works with my simulator?

The right live weather program depends on the simulator, its major version and the platform on which it is running.

Are weather engines and cloud add-ons the same thing?

A weather engine obtains observations and forecast data, interprets them and supplies weather to the simulator; a visual add-on may only replace cloud textures, lighting or atmospheric effects.

Some packages combine both functions, but many do not. Look for explicit references to live weather, METAR downloads, upper-air forecasts or weather injection. A collection of cloud textures or presets alone cannot follow real-world conditions.

Which option should I choose?

Use the simulator's built-in weather first when it provides global coverage and satisfactory results; choose an external engine when you need features its native system lacks.

  • Built-in weather: the simplest choice for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024, X-Plane 12 and FlightGear. It normally integrates most closely with the simulator's cloud, visibility and atmospheric systems.
  • ActiveSky: suited to a supported PC simulator when you want a dedicated briefing interface, weather control, smoothing or historical-weather functions offered by that particular edition.
  • REX weather products: useful when the matching edition offers the alternative weather injection or visual package you want. Weather Force 2020 and Sky Force 3D are different products for different simulator families.
  • xEnviro: an X-Plane-specific option combining weather generation with atmospheric rendering. Confirm support for the exact X-Plane major version.
  • FSrealWX: primarily relevant to older simulators. Test that its data feed and simulator connection still work before depending on it.

How do I prevent two weather programs from conflicting?

Run one active weather injector and disable every competing source for that flight.

  1. Verify compatibility: match the program to the exact simulator, major version, operating system and platform. PC companion applications do not run directly on Xbox or PlayStation.
  2. Install the required connector: older simulators commonly use SimConnect, while X-Plane products normally install a plug-in. Use only the connector supplied for that simulator version.
  3. Select one weather source: if an external engine is injecting weather, disable the simulator's own live-weather updates unless the engine's instructions specifically say otherwise.
  4. Match the time mode: live weather normally follows real-world UTC. If the simulator is set to another date, use historical weather only when the selected engine supports it.
  5. Check the result: compare the engine's displayed station report with the simulator's wind, pressure and visibility. Then check winds aloft after departure; matching surface weather alone does not prove the full forecast loaded.

Why does the simulator weather differ from the METAR?

A small mismatch does not necessarily mean the program is broken, because a METAR is a time-stamped observation from one point rather than a complete description of the surrounding atmosphere.

The engine may be blending two stations, smoothing a transition or combining the latest METAR with a forecast model for cloud coverage and upper winds. Simulator cloud systems also translate reported layers into their own visual model, so cloud bases and coverage will not always match literally.

  • Old conditions: inspect the observation time and force a data refresh; the nearest station may not have issued a newer report.
  • Weather repeatedly resets: another injector or the simulator's native live weather is probably still active.
  • Correct pressure but no clouds: check that the engine is in injection mode rather than briefing-only mode.
  • No connection: confirm the correct connector is installed and that security software is not blocking the weather program's network or local simulator connection.
  • Abrupt redraws: increase transition or smoothing settings if that engine provides them, accepting that slower transitions can delay the arrival of newly reported weather.
