Cessna’s history began with Kansas farmer and self-taught aviator Clyde Cessna, who built and flew an aeroplane in 1911. The company he founded in Wichita in 1927 became known for practical high-wing light aircraft, then expanded into twins, military types, business jets and utility turboprops. Since 1992, Cessna has belonged to Textron.

Who founded Cessna, and when?
Clyde Vernon Cessna founded the company after teaching himself to fly during aviation’s pioneering period. His early experiments culminated in a successful flight in 1911, and he subsequently built and demonstrated several monoplanes.
In 1925, Cessna joined Walter Beech and Lloyd Stearman to establish Travel Air Manufacturing in Wichita. Their priorities differed: Cessna favoured monoplanes, while the early market remained strongly attached to biplanes. He left Travel Air and formed the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company with Victor Roos in 1927. Roos departed shortly afterwards, leaving the business to become the Cessna Aircraft Company.
The Great Depression forced the company to suspend operations in the early 1930s. Clyde’s nephews, aeronautical engineers Dwane and Dwight Wallace, revived it in 1934. The efficient C-34 helped restore the name, while large military orders for the twin-engined T-50 Bobcat gave Cessna valuable mass-production experience during the Second World War.

Which aircraft made Cessna famous?
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk became the company’s defining aircraft. Introduced in 1956 as a tricycle-undercarriage development of the tailwheel Model 170, it combined forgiving handling, good visibility, straightforward maintenance and enough useful load for training and touring. It is widely recognised as the most-produced aircraft family in history; our separate explanation covers why the 172 became aviation’s standard trainer.
The 172 was only one part of a carefully layered range. The two-seat 150 and 152 served the training market, while the 180, 182 and 206 offered progressively greater load-carrying and touring capability. Retractable models such as the 210 targeted faster personal transport, and the 310 established Cessna in the post-war light-twin market. A mistake we see often is describing Cessna as exclusively a maker of strut-braced, high-wing piston singles. Those aircraft built its public identity, but the company also produced low-wing twins, military trainers, attack aircraft, business jets and turboprops.
The Citation programme was particularly significant. Rather than competing solely on maximum speed, the original Citation 500 emphasised manageable handling, practical runway performance and lower operating demands. It grew into a broad business-jet family. The single-engined Model 208 Caravan, first flown in 1982, applied similar practical thinking to cargo, passenger and remote-area operations.

Why did Cessna stop making piston aircraft?
Cessna stopped producing piston-engined aircraft in 1986 because demand had fallen and product-liability exposure had become increasingly costly. General Dynamics had acquired the company in 1985, but the shutdown did not mean Cessna had closed: Citation jets and Caravan turboprops continued.
Textron purchased Cessna from General Dynamics in 1992. The General Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994 limited US manufacturer liability for many older general-aviation aircraft, while market conditions also improved. Cessna opened piston-aircraft production in Independence, Kansas, and resumed deliveries in 1996 with new versions of the 172, 182 and 206.
This creates a useful historical caveat: although the Skyhawk has an exceptionally long production life, it was not produced continuously. Existing aircraft remained in service during the ten-year factory hiatus, which helped preserve the training fleet and demand for new examples.
Who owns Cessna now?
Cessna is owned by Textron and operates as a brand within Textron Aviation. Textron acquired Cessna in 1992, and the formation of Textron Aviation in 2014 brought Cessna together organisationally with Beechcraft and Hawker.
The Cessna name has since covered piston singles, Citation business jets, Caravan utility turboprops and the larger twin-engined SkyCourier. That unusually broad progression—from a self-built 1911 monoplane to training aircraft, military jets and commercial turboprops—is the central thread of Cessna aircraft history.
