What types of engines do Cessna aircraft use?
Cessna aircraft use three main engine types: horizontally opposed piston engines in most light singles and twins, Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprops in aircraft such as the Caravan and SkyCourier, and turbofans in Citation business jets. The exact engine, fuel and manufacturer depend on the aircraft model, variant and production year.

What engine does a Cessna 172 use?
A Cessna 172 can have a Continental or Lycoming piston engine, depending on its variant and age.
Early Skyhawks commonly used the six-cylinder Continental O-300. Many subsequent versions received four-cylinder Lycoming O-320 engines, while later fuel-injected aircraft such as the 172R and 172S use versions of the Lycoming IO-360. Specialised Jet-A-burning compression-ignition versions have also existed, so “Cessna 172 engine” is still not a complete identification.

What engines do the Cessna 182 and 206 use?
Cessna 182 and 206 aircraft generally use larger six-cylinder piston engines from Continental or Lycoming.
Legacy 182s are strongly associated with the Continental O-470, while later production aircraft use Lycoming IO-540 or turbocharged TIO-540 variants. Older 206s commonly used Continental IO-520-family engines; later Stationairs use Lycoming IO-540 or TIO-540 installations.

Do all Cessna aircraft use avgas?
No: piston Cessnas usually burn approved aviation petrol, while Cessna turboprops and jets use approved turbine fuel such as Jet A.
- Conventional piston engines generally use the avgas grade specified in the aircraft’s approved documentation.
- Turboprops and turbofans burn turbine fuel rather than avgas.
- Compression-ignition piston engines may burn Jet A despite often being called aviation diesels.
Never choose fuel from the broad aircraft name alone. A fuel approved for one 172, 182 or 206 engine installation is not automatically approved for another, and road petrol or road diesel must not be substituted without explicit aircraft and engine approval.
What do Cessna engine designations mean?
Common piston-engine prefixes describe the engine’s layout and induction system, although the complete suffix is needed to identify the installation.
- O generally denotes horizontally opposed cylinders.
- IO denotes fuel injection on an opposed engine.
- TIO or TSIO denotes a turbocharged, fuel-injected opposed engine.
A turbocharged piston engine is not a turbine engine. Turbocharging uses an exhaust-driven compressor to maintain induction pressure, while a turboprop such as the PT6A is a gas turbine that turns a propeller.
How do I identify the exact engine in a Cessna?
The approved aircraft documents, data plates and maintenance records provide the definitive engine identity.
- Record the full aircraft designation. Include the model suffix and serial number rather than relying on “172” or “182”.
- Check the POH or AFM. Its limitations and engine sections identify the approved powerplant, fuel and operating limits for that aircraft.
- Verify the data plate and records. Engines can be replaced, upgraded or converted during an airframe’s life.
- Match simulation procedures to the simulated variant. Do not use a carburetted 172 checklist for a fuel-injected, diesel or differently modelled aircraft simply because the exterior looks similar.
