How do you perform slow flight in a Cessna aircraft?

Cessna also builds faster piston, retractable-gear and turbine aircraft, so the applicable Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH), checklist and instructor take precedence. What counts as slow flight in a Cessna?

Slow flight is controlled flight near the low-speed end of the aeroplane’s operating envelope, where control response is reduced, angle of attack is high and considerable power may be required to maintain altitude.

It is not automatically a stall demonstration. Depending on the training authority and exercise, the target may be a specified speed, a condition close to the stall warning, or the speed at which any further increase in angle of attack, load factor or power reduction would cause a stall. An unintended horn, buffet or loss of control is a cue to reduce angle of attack and recover.

Lower airspeed leaves less airflow over the control surfaces, although propeller slipstream still helps the elevator and rudder on many piston Cessnas. Turns also increase load factor and stall speed, which is why banks are normally kept shallow during the exercise.

Cessna slow-flight procedure

The practical sequence is to decelerate while holding altitude, configure below the relevant limits, stabilise with power and trim, and then perform only the manoeuvres included in the exercise. If the cockpit functions are unfamiliar, first review how the Cessna 172’s primary controls, power controls, flaps and trim work.

  1. Brief the exercise. Identify the target speed or flight condition, flap setting, minimum practice height, stall cues and recovery sequence. Obtain these from the correct POH or AFM, approved checklist and instructor rather than copying figures from another Cessna model.
  2. Clear the area. Choose uncongested airspace at an altitude that meets local rules and leaves ample recovery margin. Maintain an effective lookout and complete any clearing procedure required by the training organisation.
  3. Establish a reference. Begin in stable straight-and-level flight. Note the heading and altitude, and set mixture, propeller and other engine controls as the aircraft checklist requires.
  4. Reduce power. Apply carburettor heat first if the aircraft has it and the POH calls for it. Reduce power while progressively increasing back pressure to prevent the nose from dropping as speed decays.
  5. Configure the aeroplane. Below the applicable maximum flap-extended speed, select the planned flap setting in stages. Do not assume that slow flight always requires full flap. Retractable Cessnas must use the gear configuration specified for that aircraft and exercise.
  6. Stabilise and trim. As the target condition approaches, add enough power to arrest any descent. Set pitch for the required airspeed, use power mainly to control altitude, correct yaw with rudder and then trim away sustained pressure. Pitch and power remain coupled, so make small changes and allow the aeroplane to settle.
  7. Perform the manoeuvres. Maintain altitude, heading and coordination, then introduce any required shallow turns, climbs or descents. Look outside for attitude and traffic rather than chasing every airspeed-indicator movement.

What airspeed and flap setting should you use?

Use the target and configuration derived from the exact aircraft’s POH or AFM data together with the instructor’s syllabus or applicable flight-test standard; there is no universal Cessna slow-flight speed.

  • Model and configuration: A Cessna 152, 172, 182 or retractable model can have different flap ranges, limitations, stall-warning behaviour and V-speeds.
  • Weight and load factor: Stall speed changes with aircraft weight and rises as bank angle and load factor increase.
  • Training objective: Clean slow flight, landing-configuration slow flight and flight near the onset of a stall are related but distinct exercises.
  • Instrument error: Indicated airspeed can be less accurate at high angles of attack, so attitude, coordination and aerodynamic cues also matter.

Do not choose a target by adding an arbitrary number of knots to a published stall speed. Published stall figures apply to stated conditions and are not interchangeable between variants.

What usually goes wrong during Cessna slow flight?

The most common slow-flight errors are chasing the airspeed indicator, allowing uncoordinated yaw, using trim as the primary pitch control and retracting flaps too quickly during recovery.

How do you recover from slow flight?

Recover by applying the permitted power smoothly, reducing angle of attack enough to accelerate, managing yaw, retracting flaps according to the POH and returning to the desired climb or cruise configuration.

  1. Apply power. Use full power in trainers when the approved procedure calls for it, or the maximum permitted setting for the aircraft and conditions. Set carburettor heat and other engine controls as directed, and counter the resulting yaw with rudder.
  2. Reduce angle of attack. Lower the nose enough to prevent or stop a stall and allow acceleration. Do not sacrifice stall prevention merely to hold altitude.
  3. Retract flaps progressively. Follow the exact POH or checklist sequence. Removing all flap at once can produce a sudden loss of lift and substantial sink.
  4. Accelerate and reconfigure. Keep the aircraft coordinated, remain within flap and gear speed limits, establish the desired climb or level-flight attitude, set power and trim, and complete the after-manoeuvre checks.

If the aeroplane actually stalls during the exercise, abandon the slow-flight tolerances and use the aircraft’s approved stall-recovery procedure. Regaining controlled flight takes priority over maintaining the assigned altitude or heading.
