Is ChasePlane compatible with MSFS 2020, 2024, P3D and FSX?

Ian Stephens
In short

See which ChasePlane edition works with MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024, Prepar3D and FSX, plus console limits and fixes for connection failures.

ChasePlane works with MSFS 2020 on PC, while legacy ChasePlane releases were built for FSX and supported Prepar3D versions. The MSFS 2020 edition is not automatically compatible with MSFS 2024; that simulator needs a build explicitly made for it. ChasePlane cannot run on Xbox or PlayStation consoles.

ChasePlane compatibility by simulator

Compatibility depends on the simulator generation, ChasePlane edition and platform; the word MSFS alone is not specific enough.

SimulatorCompatibilityWhat to use
MSFS 2020 on PCYesUse the dedicated MSFS 2020 release.
MSFS 2024 on PCOnly with a 2024-labelled buildDo not reuse the MSFS 2020 edition unless its documentation explicitly adds MSFS 2024 support.
Prepar3D on PCYes, for supported versionsUse the legacy ChasePlane branch and confirm that it names your Prepar3D major version.
FSX on PCYes, through the legacy releaseCheck that the installer covers your particular FSX edition.
Xbox or PlayStationNoChasePlane requires a Windows companion application and simulator integration unavailable on consoles.

The modern MSFS product and the older FSX/Prepar3D utility are separate code branches, not interchangeable installers. Our background on ChasePlane's MSFS release and version roadmap explains how support moved from the legacy simulators to modern MSFS.

Does the MSFS 2020 version work in MSFS 2024?

No: the MSFS 2020 edition should not be treated as an MSFS 2024-compatible product unless that exact build explicitly lists both simulators. ChasePlane's MSFS 2024 support requires a separate integration path, so an installer that detects 2020 may simply fail to see 2024.

ChasePlane is an external camera manager, not an ordinary aircraft or scenery package. Moving its files into the MSFS 2024 Community folder cannot create compatibility. This is the same version boundary covered in our explanation of why MSFS 2020 add-ons do not automatically work in MSFS 2024.

If your installer, account library or documentation says only MSFS 2020, treat it as 2020-only. If it explicitly names MSFS 2024, use the matching 2024 installation procedure rather than pointing the 2020 utility at the newer simulator.

Which ChasePlane edition should you install?

Install the edition that names your exact simulator and platform.

  1. Confirm the platform: ChasePlane is a Windows PC utility. Console editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator cannot load it.
  2. Match the product branch: use the modern MSFS edition for MSFS 2020, a build explicitly labelled for MSFS 2024, or the legacy edition for supported FSX and Prepar3D installations.
  3. Let the installer place its integration components: do not copy legacy FSX/P3D files into MSFS or manually place the whole application in Community.
  4. Test one simulator first: load a default aircraft, start ChasePlane as directed and create a simple cockpit view before importing profiles or adding another camera utility.

For the connector, first launch and view creation, follow our ChasePlane installation and first-run checklist.

Why is ChasePlane not connecting to the simulator?

Most connection failures come from the wrong ChasePlane branch, a blocked integration component or conflicting camera controls.

  • Wrong simulator build: a ChasePlane package intended for MSFS 2020, FSX or Prepar3D will not gain MSFS 2024 support merely by changing its installation path.
  • Connector blocked or missing: repair the installation and check whether Windows security software quarantined one of the components supplied by the installer.
  • Mixed permissions: running the simulator as administrator but ChasePlane normally, or the reverse, can prevent communication. Launch both at the same privilege level.
  • Competing camera inputs: duplicate cockpit, drone, hat-switch or look-axis bindings can make views snap back or move twice. Disable the conflicting assignment or second camera utility.
  • Aircraft profile mismatch: a view profile may reference camera positions from a different aircraft variant. Select or create a profile for the aircraft actually loaded.
  • Legacy path or runtime problem: after moving FSX or Prepar3D, repair the legacy ChasePlane installation and its supplied dependencies rather than borrowing DLL files from another simulator.

Can ChasePlane run on Xbox or PlayStation?

No. ChasePlane depends on a Windows companion program and external simulator integration that console editions do not permit. This excludes MSFS 2020 on Xbox, as well as MSFS 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro; use the simulator's built-in camera system on those platforms.
