What is Class B airspace? Learn how to read its shelves and meet the ATC, pilot, equipment, weather and speed rules for safe entry.
Class B airspace surrounds the United States’ busiest airports and is individually shaped to contain dense arrival and departure traffic. VFR pilots may enter only after ATC explicitly clears them into it; IFR pilots enter under an ATC clearance. Both must meet the applicable pilot, equipment and operating rules.
In our Aviation & Real-World Flying coverage, “Class B” refers primarily to the FAA definition used in the United States. Other countries may assign different services and entry requirements to the same ICAO airspace class.
How is Class B airspace structured?
Class B airspace normally resembles an upside-down wedding cake, with a surface area around the primary airport and wider shelves at higher altitudes. It generally extends to about 10,000 feet MSL, but every Class B area has individually designed lateral and vertical limits.
On a US sectional chart, solid blue lines mark the boundaries. Altitudes are printed in hundreds of feet MSL:
- 100/SFC means the airspace extends from the surface to 10,000 feet MSL.
- 100/40 means the shelf extends from 4,000 to 10,000 feet MSL.
- Different segments can have different floors, so crossing one boundary may place the aircraft inside Class B without any horizontal turn.
The associated 30-NM Mode C veil is not the Class B boundary. It is an equipment area surrounding the primary airport; being inside that ring neither grants entry clearance nor means every part of the ring is Class B.
What does a pilot need to enter Class B airspace?
A VFR pilot needs an explicit ATC clearance plus the required qualifications and aircraft equipment before crossing a Class B boundary.

ATC separates aircraft operating inside Class B, including VFR traffic, but that does not remove a VFR pilot’s duty to maintain visual meteorological conditions, watch for traffic and avoid wake turbulence.
How does a VFR pilot obtain Class B clearance?
The pilot should contact the controlling facility early enough to receive instructions while still remaining outside the airspace.
- Study the route and shelves. Identify every floor and ceiling along the planned track, using MSL rather than AGL, and choose an altitude that keeps the aircraft clear until clearance is received.
- Obtain airport information. For an arrival or departure, listen to the recorded weather, runway and operational information first; our explanation of how pilots use ATIS before contacting ATC covers what to record.
- Make a concise request. Give the callsign, aircraft type if needed, position, altitude and intended route. A typical request is
N123AB, five miles west at 2,500 feet, request Bravo transition eastbound. - Wait for explicit clearance. “Stand by”, “radar contact”, a transponder code or ordinary flight following is not permission to enter. Remain outside until ATC clearly states that the aircraft is cleared into or through Class B.
- Read back and comply. Confirm headings, altitudes and route restrictions. If an instruction would put the aircraft in cloud, below a safe altitude or beyond its capabilities, say
unableimmediately and request an alternative. - Monitor the frequency. Follow revised instructions and frequency changes until ATC advises that the aircraft is leaving Class B or approves a frequency change.

Can ATC refuse entry into Class B airspace?
ATC can delay or refuse a VFR Class B transition because of traffic, controller workload or an unsuitable requested route. VFR access is not guaranteed.
If told to remain clear, do exactly that and use the planned alternative: pass beneath a shelf where legal, route around the boundary, hold in a safe location or land elsewhere. Do not orbit close to a boundary while trying to renegotiate; wind, workload or an autopilot turn can carry the aircraft inside.
What Class B mistakes cause airspace violations?
Most Class B infringements come from misunderstanding the boundary or treating radio contact as clearance.
- Climbing into a shelf: A pilot stays outside the surface area but climbs through a shelf floor marked in MSL.
- Mistaking contact for clearance: The controller assigns a squawk code or says “radar contact”, and the pilot enters without hearing “cleared into Bravo”.
- Confusing the Mode C veil with Class B: The 30-NM equipment ring is treated as if it were the controlled-airspace boundary.
- Following GPS without checking altitude: A magenta route passes under one shelf and directly into a lower adjoining segment.
- Accepting an unsafe restriction: A VFR pilot follows an altitude instruction towards cloud instead of reporting the problem and declining it.
- Changing frequency too soon: The pilot leaves the assigned frequency before ATC approves the change or completes a hand-off.
Speed limits still apply. Below 10,000 feet MSL the general limit is 250 KIAS, while flight beneath a Class B shelf or through a designated VFR corridor is generally limited to 200 KIAS, subject to the minimum-safe-speed provision.
Does Class B work the same way in flight simulators?
Flight simulators can help pilots practise chart reading, radio timing and altitude discipline, but built-in ATC may simplify Bravo boundaries or omit the exact FAA clearance phraseology. Treat the charted boundary as controlling rather than assuming the software will stop or warn you.

Does Class B mean the same thing outside the United States?
Class B is not applied uniformly worldwide. A country may use different entry rules, equipment standards, weather minima or services, while some countries do not designate operational airspace as Class B at all. Pilots must use that country’s aeronautical publications and charts rather than transferring FAA Bravo procedures unchanged.
