How does the Q300's longer fuselage affect operations?
The stretch gives the Q300 more passenger and baggage capacity, but it also brings higher empty and take-off weights. When enough seats are filled, that usually gives it better economics per passenger than operating the smaller Q200.
The Q200 remains attractive where traffic cannot support 50-plus seats, or where the lighter aircraft produces a better runway, obstacle or payload result. The Q300 is still a short-haul, short-runway turboprop, but crews and dispatchers cannot substitute Q200 performance figures: take-off speeds, climb data, balance limits and runway requirements must come from the exact aircraft documentation.
Do the Q200 and Q300 use the same engines?
They use different members and ratings of the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123 family. Principal Q200 subtypes use PW123C or PW123D engines in roughly the 2,150-shaft-horsepower class, while Q300 installations depend on subtype; later PW123E-powered versions are commonly associated with about 2,380 shaft horsepower.

What does the Q in Q200 and Q300 mean?
The Q denotes the noise- and vibration-suppression treatment associated with the quieter-cabin branding, not the aircraft's size. A Q200 remains a short-fuselage Series 200, while a Q300 remains the stretched Series 300.
Official records and simulator packages may instead use designations such as DHC-8-202, DHC-8-311 or DHC-8-315. Not every Series 200 or 300 was originally marketed with the Q name, and cabin upgrades can blur casual usage, so the numbered subtype is the safer identifier.
Which Dash 8 should an operator choose?
The Q200 suits thinner routes, while the Q300 makes sense when demand and payload justify its extra seats.
- Choose the Q200 for approximately 30–40 passengers, lower trip demand or an airport analysis that favours the lighter airframe.
- Choose the Q300 for approximately 45–56 passengers, more baggage capacity and lower per-seat costs when the additional seats can be sold.
- Check the exact subtype before deciding: elevation, temperature, obstacles, runway condition, reserves and passenger baggage can reverse a simple paper comparison.
Published maximum range is particularly easy to misuse. It does not show how far the aircraft can fly with a full cabin, realistic baggage, required reserves and the runway limits of both airports.
How can simmers tell a Q200 from a Q300?
The fuselage length is the quickest visual clue: the Q300 has a noticeably longer cabin and a modestly wider wing. A designation ending in -300, -301, -311, -314 or -315 also identifies the stretched family, even when a livery or menu calls it simply a Dash 8.
