Fix DCS World not launching with ordered checks for mods, Saved Games profiles, repairs, VR, security blocks and startup logs.
DCS World usually fails to launch because its files are damaged, a Saved Games profile or mod is incompatible, security software blocks an executable, or the graphics/VR start-up path fails. Start by removing mods, renaming the DCS profile folder, repairing the installation, and checking the log rather than reinstalling immediately.
What should you try first when DCS World will not open?
Work through these checks in order, testing DCS after each one so that you identify the cause instead of changing several things at once.
- End stalled DCS processes. Open Task Manager and close any remaining DCS, launcher or updater processes, then restart Windows. If the DCS process remains active but its window never progresses, treat it as a hang and use our checks for a DCS process that stops responding.
- Launch without VR or custom arguments. Remove temporary command-line options and use the normal desktop launch mode. If DCS opens in 2D but not with a headset enabled, follow the VR-specific start-up checks instead of reinstalling the simulator.
- Disable mods non-destructively. Rename the
Modsfolder inside the active Saved Games DCS profile toMods.disabled. Disable any mod manager changes to the installation directory as well; our guide to diagnosing DCS mod paths and compatibility explains why Saved Games and core-file mods require different fixes. - Test a clean Saved Games profile. Rename
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCStoDCS.backup. Older installations may useDCS.openbeta, so rename the folder DCS actually updates. The simulator should create a fresh profile on its next start. - Repair the game files. Standalone users can run the official repair function through the DCS updater, while Steam users should verify the installed files through Steam. Follow our separate repair procedure for both editions if files are missing or have been altered.
- Check Windows security controls. Review antivirus quarantine and Controlled Folder Access for blocked DCS, launcher or updater executables. Restore or permit a file only when it belongs to the legitimate installation; do not permanently disable security software.
- Remove graphics start-up variables. Update or cleanly reinstall the graphics driver if the failure began after a driver change. If you retained the original profile, rename its
fxoandmetashaders2folders so DCS can rebuild the shader caches; the first subsequent load can take longer.
What does each DCS launch symptom mean?
The point at which DCS stops usually identifies the part of the start-up process that needs attention.
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| No window and no DCS process | Broken shortcut, blocked executable, permissions or missing prerequisite |
| Splash screen appears, then closes | Saved Games configuration, incompatible mod, graphics initialisation or damaged file |
| DCS process remains active indefinitely | Start-up hang, shader compilation, peripheral, overlay or profile problem |
| Clean profile launches successfully | Old configuration, script, control file, shader cache or Saved Games mod |
| Desktop mode works but VR does not | VR runtime, headset software, launch mode or VR configuration |
| Failure started after an update | Outdated mod, edited core file or incomplete update |
How do you reset DCS without losing your controls?
Rename the complete profile first, then restore only known-good personal data after DCS has launched successfully with the fresh profile.
Control bindings are normally stored beneath Saved Games\DCS\Config\Input, with a legacy profile name where applicable. Copy that folder into the new profile only after confirming the clean configuration starts correctly. Restore missions, screenshots and liveries separately, testing between each change.
Do not immediately copy the entire old Config or Scripts folder back. Doing so can restore the faulty options.lua, export script or add-on hook and make DCS fail again.
Where is the DCS World startup log?
The main start-up log is normally Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log, or the equivalent path under the legacy profile folder.
Read the final section after a failed launch and look for a named module, DLL, access-denied message, graphics initialisation error or memory failure. The last line is not automatically the cause; it may simply be the final successful operation recorded before another component failed.
If no new log is created at all, DCS probably failed before its logging system initialised. Concentrate on the shortcut, security quarantine, executable permissions, packaged prerequisites and installation repair rather than cockpit modules or mission content.
Should you reinstall DCS World?
Reinstall DCS only after both a clean Saved Games profile and an installation repair fail.
A normal uninstall may leave Saved Games\DCS untouched, so reinstalling can reproduce the same broken configuration immediately. Reinstallation makes sense when the updater cannot complete a repair, files repeatedly fail verification, or the installation has been moved or altered beyond reliable repair.
