How do I repair a DCS World installation?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Repair a DCS World installation on standalone or Steam, choose the right scan, protect mods and settings, and fix problems repair cannot solve.

To repair DCS World standalone, close the simulator and run its Repair DCS World shortcut, or run DCS_updater.exe repair from the installation’s bin folder. For the Steam edition, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Repair checks the core installation and replaces missing or altered files.

How do you repair DCS World standalone?

  1. Close DCS World and its launcher. Wait for any active update to finish rather than interrupting it.
  2. Disable installation-folder mods. Modified cockpit files, scripts and textures may be replaced during repair. Our guide to managing DCS mods and their installation locations explains the difference between core-folder and Saved Games modifications.
  3. Run the repair shortcut. Open the DCS World group in the Windows Start menu and select Repair DCS World. The precise shortcut location can vary with the installation.
  4. Use the updater directly if the shortcut is missing. Open a terminal in the DCS World bin folder and run DCS_updater.exe repair. In PowerShell, the command may need to be entered as .\DCS_updater.exe repair.
  5. Choose the appropriate check. Start with the normal repair. Select the slower all-files check if corruption persists or several modules are affected. If offered an extra-file search, use it when old core-folder mods may have left files behind.
  6. Allow replacement files to download. Launch DCS only after the updater reports that repair has finished.

Run the command with administrator rights only if the normal repair fails because Windows cannot write to the installation directory. Repeated permission errors usually point to folder permissions, security software or an installation under a protected location.

How do you verify the DCS World Steam edition?

  1. Remove or disable core-folder modifications. Keep a separate backup of anything you want to reinstall later.
  2. Open the Steam library. Right-click DCS World Steam Edition and open Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Wait for verification and downloads to finish. Steam will replace official files that are missing or differ from its manifest.

Steam verification repairs the Steam edition only; do not use the standalone DCS updater against that installation. Verification may also leave unrelated extra files in place, so an abandoned mod can still cause trouble after every official file passes.

Which DCS repair option should you choose?

Normal standalone repairA file is missing, an update failed or DCS suddenly will not startChecks the installed build and replaces detected damaged or modified files
Slow or all-files repairThe normal repair finds nothing but the fault remainsReads every applicable file, taking longer on large installations
Extra-file search or cleanupCore-folder mods or an old manual modification may remainIdentifies files that are not part of the official installation; inspect any backup or removal prompt carefully

Does repairing DCS delete mods, settings or controls?

A core repair can overwrite mods installed inside the DCS World programme directory, but it normally leaves the active Saved Games profile alone. Control bindings, options, logs and many user-installed modifications are usually stored under %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS; older or alternate profiles may use DCS.openbeta.

Back up manual modifications before repairing. An extra-file cleanup may move or remove unrecognised files from the programme directory, while Steam verification can restore modified stock files without removing every added file.

Repair also does not reset a broken control profile or configuration file. That distinction matters: a clean core installation can still fail because of content under Saved Games.

What should you do if DCS still fails after repair?

If repair completes successfully but the same problem remains, test the user profile and third-party content rather than repeating the identical repair.

  1. Test a clean Saved Games profile. Close DCS, open %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games, and rename the active DCS or DCS.openbeta folder to a unique backup name. DCS will create a fresh profile on its next launch.
  2. Restore files selectively. If the clean profile works, move controls, missions and other required content back in stages. Restoring the whole old folder immediately also restores the fault.
  3. Check security software and free space. A quarantined executable or a full drive can cause the replacement file to disappear again. Verify any alert before allowing a file, and do not leave protection disabled.
  4. Read the DCS log. The active Saved Games profile contains Logs\dcs.log, which can reveal a failing mod, missing dependency or graphics initialisation problem.

For faults that survive both repair and a clean profile test, follow our DCS freezing, crashing and loading checklist. If DCS_updater.exe itself is missing or unusable, preserve the Saved Games profile and consult our standalone and Steam installation walkthrough before reinstalling.

How long does a DCS World repair take?

There is no fixed repair time. It depends on the selected scan, storage speed, number of installed terrains and modules, how many files need replacing and the download connection. An all-files scan takes longer because it must read the entire applicable installation, even when it ultimately downloads nothing.

A repair also needs working space for downloaded and replaced data. If it appears stalled, check disk and network activity before forcing it to close; interrupting the replacement stage can leave another incomplete installation.
