Download FSXWX Weather Engine for FSX safely, install it correctly and fix SimConnect, permissions and live-weather connection errors.
Download FSXWX for FSX or FSX: Steam Edition through the developer-authorised download referenced in our FSXWX compatibility and setup overview. Use that source rather than an anonymous repack. FSXWX runs as a separate weather application; do not place it in Addon Scenery, SimObjects or the main FSX programme folder.
How do I install FSXWX in FSX?
FSXWX should be extracted to its own writable folder and run alongside the simulator.
- Download the authorised package using the source referenced above, then scan the archive with your normal security software.
- Extract every file into a dedicated folder you control, such as
Documents\FSXWX. Do not run the application from inside the compressed archive. - Start FSX and load fully into a flight rather than leaving the simulator at its opening menu.
- Run FSXWX separately and start its weather connection. Keep the application open while flying.
- Use one weather engine at a time. Disable automatic weather changes from other engines or FSX weather options that could overwrite the injected conditions.
FSXWX is a weather injector, not a cloud-texture package. It obtains weather data and passes conditions into FSX; the simulator or a separate graphics add-on still supplies the visible cloud textures.
Why will FSXWX not connect to FSX: Steam Edition?
A failed FSXWX connection in Steam Edition usually points to SimConnect, mismatched administrator permissions or starting the engine before a flight has loaded.
- SimConnect: Repair or install the compatible SimConnect components supplied with Steam Edition. Our Steam Edition SimConnect setup instructions cover the required checks.
- Permissions: If FSX is running as administrator, FSXWX may need the same privilege level. Running one elevated and the other normally can prevent communication.
- Startup order: Load an aircraft at an airport first, then open FSXWX. Some external utilities cannot attach while FSX is still at its menu.
- Security software: Allow the genuine FSXWX executable through the firewall if prompted. Do not solve the problem by downloading loose DLL files from an unverified source.
- Multiple instances: Close duplicate copies of FSXWX and restart both applications before testing again.
Why does FSXWX connect but show no live weather?
A successful simulator connection does not prove that FSXWX can retrieve observations from its online weather source.
Check that the computer clock is correct, that FSXWX has network access and that newly retrieved weather has a sensible timestamp. If several stations return no data, reinstalling SimConnect will not help; the simulator connection is already working, and the problem is more likely to be the external data service or an ageing client.
If the original feed is unavailable, use our guide to adding real-world weather to FSX with an external engine. The comparison of FSX weather add-ons also explains which alternatives suit freeware, richer cloud depiction or more actively supported weather injection.
Should FSX built-in real-world weather remain enabled?
No. Let FSXWX control the active weather while it is running.
Two weather systems writing conditions simultaneously can cause sudden visibility changes, winds shifting during an approach or cloud layers repeatedly disappearing and rebuilding. Select a neutral simulator weather state before starting FSXWX, then avoid changing weather themes during the flight.
