You can find official aviation weather charts for Europe through each country’s national meteorological service or authorised aviation briefing portal. For cross-border flights, use the briefing service covering your departure state and retrieve SIGWX, upper-wind and temperature, radar, satellite, SIGMET and surface forecast products for the whole route.

Which official European weather source should I use?
Use the source named in GEN 3.5 of the relevant state’s AIP, rather than assuming there is one Europe-wide weather portal. European meteorological provision is organised by individual states and Flight Information Regions, and Europe includes countries outside the European Union.
- Check the departure state’s AIP. Open GEN 3.5 and identify its official aviation meteorological service or authorised briefing system.
- List every FIR or UIR on the route. Hazard warnings such as SIGMETs are issued for defined airspace, not simply for a country as a whole.
- Request a route briefing. Enter the route, altitude band and departure period so the system can collect relevant forecasts, observations and warnings. Some official services require registration or an operator account.
- Confirm foreign coverage. If the briefing omits an overflown state or destination, consult that state’s GEN 3.5 entry and obtain the missing products from its designated provider.
An AIP usually tells you who supplies the weather; it may not host every weather chart itself. Public weather pages can help with planning, but real-world pilots must use briefing sources and procedures accepted by their operator and national authority. Which aviation weather chart do I need?
Choose the product by flight level, route phase and valid period, because a chart labelled “Europe” may still cover the wrong altitude or forecast time.

High-level SIGWX charts may span much of Europe, while low-level charts are commonly produced for a country or smaller region. Surface analysis and forecast charts add useful context, but they do not replace altitude-specific aviation products. Can one weather chart cover a flight across Europe?
No single chart provides every hazard, level and valid time required for a European flight. A proper cross-border briefing combines broad-area charts with FIR-specific warnings, local low-level products and aerodrome reports.
A common mistake is to select a continental SIGWX image and assume it covers the whole flight. Its altitude band may sit above a light aircraft’s cruising level, or the route may extend beyond the chart boundary into the North Atlantic, North Africa or another forecast region. Check the chart title, geographical limits and vertical range before using it.
Radar has similar limits. A European mosaic can hide national coverage boundaries, terrain-related gaps and differences in image time. Satellite imagery shows cloud patterns but does not directly provide cloud base or aerodrome visibility; use observations and forecasts alongside it. How can I tell whether a European weather chart is current?
Read the issue time, valid time, forecast period, altitude band and units printed on the product. Aviation times are normally stated in UTC, and the issue time is not necessarily the time represented by the chart.
- Match the valid time to the planned passage through the chart area, not merely the departure time.
- Look for amended, corrected or superseding products in the briefing system.
- Check whether a wind chart uses a pressure surface or an equivalent flight level.
- Do not rely on an image-search copy with its title, legend or timestamp cropped away.
- For a simulator scenario, match the simulator’s date and UTC time to the product. Live-weather interpolation and update timing can still produce differences.
