To find your destination airport in a flight simulator, search for its ICAO identifier in the flight planner, GPS or FMS, set it as the active destination, and follow the route and distance indications. On arrival, confirm the airport from its runway orientation, surrounding landmarks and available approach guidance.

In aviation—both real-world flying and flight simulation—an airport name alone is not a reliable identifier. Codes, position, runway layout and navigation instruments together prevent you from following a route to the wrong airfield.

Which airport code should I use?

Use the airport's four-letter ICAO identifier whenever the simulator accepts it. Three-letter IATA codes are designed mainly for commercial use and may not work in every flight planner; for example, London Heathrow is EGLL in ICAO format but LHR in IATA format.

Small airfields may have only an ICAO or local identifier. After searching, verify the country, city, coordinates and runway layout rather than selecting the first similar name. Also check that the result is categorised as an airport, not a VOR or another navigation waypoint with a similar identifier.

How do I set the destination before take-off?

Set the airport as the final waypoint and confirm that the route is active before take-off.

  1. Search for the airport: Enter its ICAO code in the simulator's world map, flight planner, GPS or FMS. Searching by city or full name is a fallback when the code is unknown.
  2. Verify the result: Check the airport name, position, available runways and approximate distance from departure.

  5. Check the arrival: Note the likely runway from the wind or ATC instructions, but be prepared for that runway to change during the flight.

How do I find the airport while flying?

Follow the active waypoint's desired track, bearing and distance, then change from en-route guidance to an approach or visual circuit before reaching the airport.

On a GPS, DTK or course is the intended ground track, while BRG is the present bearing directly to the waypoint. Wind can make the required heading different from both. If the autopilot does not follow the route, check that the correct navigation source—GPS/FMS rather than VOR or localiser—is selected and that the intended leg is active.

An airport waypoint normally leads to the airport reference point, not to a runway threshold. A mistake we see constantly is following the magenta line until directly over the field and only then looking for a runway. Load an appropriate approach, follow ATC vectors or leave enough distance to join a visual circuit.

Recognising the correct airport and runway

Confirm the airport with at least two independent clues before descending towards it.

  • Runway orientation: Runway 09 points approximately 090 degrees magnetic, with reciprocal runway 27 pointing approximately 270 degrees.
  • Runway layout: Compare the number of runways, their intersections and any parallel left, centre or right designators.
  • Surroundings: Look for coastlines, rivers, roads, towns, hills and the airport's position relative to them.
  • Instrument range: Check that GPS or radio distance is decreasing towards the expected value. A convincing-looking airport several miles off the route may be the wrong one.
  • Approach guidance: Use the assigned ILS, localiser, VOR or visual approach aids where available. Airport labels can help beginners, but they are an assistance setting rather than a substitute for navigation.

At night, an airport beacon and runway lighting can help, although beacon patterns and lighting visibility vary between simulators and scenery packages. Runway numbers may also disagree with older scenery after a real airport has renumbered them for magnetic variation; compare the runway's physical orientation as well as its painted number.

Why can't I find my destination airport?

A destination usually fails to appear because of an incorrect identifier, an inactive route, a navigation-data mismatch or missing scenery.

  • The code is rejected: Try the ICAO identifier instead of the IATA code, and remove filters that exclude small airfields, heliports or seaplane bases.
  • The GPS points somewhere unexpected: Check the selected waypoint type, destination code and active leg. Resolve any route discontinuity in an FMS before relying on NAV mode.

  • The GPS airport and scenery do not align: Updated navdata can move procedures or runway references, but it cannot create or rebuild the visible airport scenery.
  • The airport is absent from the world: Confirm its identifier, disable conflicting scenery and check the simulator's airport coverage. Microsoft Flight Simulator users can work through our checks for an airport that is missing or not shown.
  • You are close but cannot see it: Haze, terrain, cockpit structure and a low viewing angle can hide a runway. Cross-check the bearing and distance, then approach from a position that gives a clear view rather than descending blindly.

The dependable sequence is correct airport code, active waypoint, matching bearing and distance, then visual runway confirmation. If one of those disagrees with the others, recheck the destination before continuing the approach.
