How to fix flickering triangles in Train Simulator Classic?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix Train Simulator Classic flickering triangles and graphical artefacts with the right settings, cache, driver, memory and route-asset checks.

To fix flickering triangles in Train Simulator Classic, first remove graphics-driver and post-processing overrides, switch to a conservative in-game anti-aliasing preset, clear the simulator cache, and verify its files. If the corruption occurs only at one location, the route asset—not the graphics card—is usually the fault.

Is it flickering geometry or screen tearing?

Screen tearing, corrupted geometry and overlapping textures require different fixes, so identify the pattern before changing settings.

Fix Train Simulator Classic graphical artefacts in order

The quickest approach is to restore a clean rendering path before reinstalling routes or changing hardware.

  1. Establish whether the problem is global. Load an unmodified route and train, then compare them with the affected scenario. Note whether the triangles remain at an exact world location or appear randomly as the camera moves.
  2. Remove external graphics overrides. Disable ReShade, post-processing injectors and other enhancements that alter rendering. In the graphics-driver control panel, reset the profiles for RailWorks.exe and RailWorks64.exe to application-controlled settings. Forced anti-aliasing, sharpening and transparency effects can conflict with the simulator's older renderer.
  3. Use conservative in-game settings. Select the monitor's native resolution, choose a simple anti-aliasing mode and temporarily lower or disable shadows. Test dynamic lighting off as a diagnostic, then re-enable it if it makes no difference. Our balanced TSC settings baseline provides a sensible starting point without pushing expensive shadow and supersampling options.
  4. Clear the simulator cache. Use Train Simulator Classic's in-game cache-clearing command, close the simulator and launch it again. This rebuilds cached blueprint information; the next route load may take longer.
  5. Verify the installation. In Steam, open the game's properties and use the installed-files verification option. Back up any intentionally modified core files first because verification can replace them. It repairs official files but does not supply missing dependencies for independently installed routes or rolling stock.
  6. Reset the graphics driver. Clear its shader cache and restart Windows. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, test a clean installation or roll back to the previously stable driver rather than assuming the newest package must work best.

Change one group of settings at a time and reload the affected location. Altering anti-aliasing, shadows, lighting and driver options together may hide the fault without revealing which change fixed it.

Why do flickering triangles appear on only one route?

Artefacts confined to one route, object or section of track usually indicate a missing dependency, damaged asset, faulty level-of-detail model or overlapping polygons.

Try the same location under different weather and lighting, and with the route's original rolling stock if available. If the fault remains attached to one bridge, building, decal or terrain tile across restarts, global driver changes are unlikely to repair it.

Use LogMate to trace missing route assets and blueprint errors. Its output can be noisy, so concentrate on missing textures, blueprints or provider products referenced as the affected area loads; unrelated warnings are common.

  • Missing or corrupt official asset: verify the associated installed content.
  • Missing third-party dependency: restore the precise asset package required by the route rather than reinstalling the whole simulator.
  • Overlapping surfaces: this is z-fighting. Graphics settings may reduce the shimmer, but only a corrected model or route tile fixes the underlying geometry.
  • Faulty LOD model: if the triangles appear only at a particular distance, the object's distance-specific mesh is probably defective.

Can memory pressure cause graphical corruption?

Memory pressure can produce corrupted textures or geometry on asset-heavy routes, particularly when the fault develops after driving for some time rather than appearing immediately.

Use the 64-bit executable for demanding routes unless an older add-on specifically requires 32-bit components. Reduce supersampling, texture quality, shadows, scenery density and view distance, then retest from a fresh simulator launch. If the problem accompanies allocation errors or crashes, follow our memory-pressure troubleshooting steps for Train Simulator Classic.

When do graphical artefacts indicate a GPU problem?

The graphics card becomes the leading suspect when random triangles appear across several routes and in other 3D applications, not at one repeatable location in Train Simulator Classic.

Return any GPU overclock or undervolt to factory settings, check temperatures and test with a clean driver installation. If the corruption appears in screenshots or video captures, it was probably generated before reaching the monitor. If captures are clean but the display flickers, examine the refresh-rate setting, display cable and monitor instead.

Persistent corruption across multiple applications at stock settings warrants hardware diagnosis. A single flickering bridge or scenery tile does not.
