Learn how to subscribe to Train Simulator Classic Workshop routes and scenarios, install dependencies, find content in-game and fix missing items.
To use the Train Simulator Classic Workshop, open the game’s Steam Workshop, choose a route or scenario, check every required DLC item, and select Subscribe. Let Steam finish downloading before starting the simulator. The content then appears in the relevant Workshop, Drive, or Build list; its exact location depends on the item type.
How do I subscribe to Train Simulator Classic Workshop content?
In Steam Workshop, Subscribe tells Steam to download, install and maintain the selected item automatically.
- Close Train Simulator Classic. Steam may pause downloads while a game is running, and the simulator does not always refresh its content lists until restarted.
- Open the Workshop. In the Steam desktop client, select Train Simulator Classic in your Library and open its Workshop through the game page or Community Hub. Steam’s labels and layout can change, but both routes lead to the same Workshop catalogue.
- Read the complete item description. Confirm whether it is a route or scenario, then check its required base route, locomotive packs, rolling stock and scenery DLC. Workshop subscription does not give you paid dependencies.
- Select Subscribe. If the page lists required Workshop items, subscribe to those as well. Marking an item as a favourite or adding it to a collection does not install it.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Check Steam’s Downloads view rather than assuming the item installed immediately. Allow any queued Train Simulator Classic content to complete.
- Start the simulator and locate the item. The first load can take longer while Train Simulator Classic refreshes its route and scenario database.
We recommend subscribing to one unfamiliar item at a time. If something breaks, this makes the responsible route or scenario much easier to identify.
Where does subscribed Workshop content appear?
Workshop scenarios and routes do not always appear in the same Train Simulator Classic menu.

The in-game Workshop screen is convenient for launching subscribed scenarios, but the Steam client usually presents descriptions and dependency lists more clearly.
Why is my Workshop route or scenario not showing?
Most missing Train Simulator Classic Workshop items are caused by a pending download, an active menu filter or an uninstalled dependency rather than damaged core files.
- Nothing appears: confirm Steam shows Subscribed rather than Favourite, check the download queue, restart Steam and then restart the simulator.
- The route exists but the scenario does not: clear scenario filters and check the Workshop, Career, Standard and Free Roam categories associated with that route.
- The scenario reports missing stock: you do not own or have not installed one of the locomotive or rolling-stock packs used by its author.
- Track, signals or scenery are absent: the Workshop route references an asset pack that is missing. Check both the dependency panel and the author’s written requirements; they are not always identical.
- The item loads incorrectly after an update: unsubscribe, let Steam process the removal, restart Steam and subscribe again. This replaces the Workshop-managed copy, but it cannot supply missing DLC.

If Train Simulator Classic starts crashing immediately after a subscription, remove the newest item first and test again. If the crash remains, work through our staged Train Simulator Classic crash checks before reinstalling the whole simulator.
Is the Steam Workshop the same as installing mods?
No. The Workshop is Steam’s managed system for compatible community routes and scenarios; it is not a universal Train Simulator Classic mod installer.
Manual .rwp packages, reskins, sound packs and utilities may use a separate installer or the simulator’s package-management tools. Paid DLC is also separate. A Workshop scenario may reference those assets, but subscribing only installs the scenario itself.
How do Workshop updates and unsubscription work?
Steam automatically updates subscribed Workshop items when their authors publish revisions.
Avoid editing a subscribed route or scenario in place if you want to preserve your changes, because an update may replace them. Clone the content through the editor where appropriate and keep a backup of anything you have modified.
To remove an item, return to its Workshop page and select Unsubscribe, close the simulator and allow Steam to process the change. Do not delete unidentified folders from RailWorks\Content\Routes: route folders use internal identifiers, so guessing can remove unrelated official or community content.
Can I publish my own Train Simulator Classic Workshop item?
Yes. Routes and scenarios created in the Train Simulator Classic editors can be shared through the available Workshop publishing command.
Only include files you created or have permission to distribute. Your item may reference official DLC, but it must not redistribute those assets. We recommend listing every required route, locomotive and asset pack in the description, because a scenario that works on your installation may rely on content you have forgotten is installed.
