How do I repair the FSX–Steam connection?
The quickest reliable repair is to re-establish a clean, normally privileged Steam session before changing FSX itself.
- Exit FSX and Steam completely. Use Steam's Exit command rather than merely closing its window. Check Task Manager for lingering
fsx.exeor Steam processes; restarting Windows is the simplest way to clear all of them. - Start Steam online and sign in. Use an account that has access to FSX: Steam Edition. - Launch FSX from the Steam Library. Do this even if a desktop shortcut previously worked. If the Library launch succeeds, replace the old shortcut rather than changing the game files.
- Remove privilege and compatibility mismatches. Open FSX's local folder through Steam, inspect the Compatibility properties for
fsx.exe, and clear “Run this program as an administrator” and Windows compatibility mode. Check the Steam shortcut or executable for the same settings, then run both normally. - Verify the FSX files. No; FSX: Steam Edition and Steam should normally run without permanent administrator settings. The critical point is that both processes use the same privilege level, because an elevated fsx.exe can have trouble communicating with a normally launched Steam client.
If a legacy add-on installer needs administrator permission, elevate the installer only. Leaving Steam permanently elevated creates an unnecessary security risk and can cause different problems with overlays, controllers and external utilities.
Will Steam verification remove my FSX add-ons?
Steam verification normally leaves untracked add-on files in place, but it can replace modified stock files. Back up hand-edited default aircraft, gauges or other core files before verifying.
