Activate FSX after installation with the right steps for boxed, Gold, Acceleration and Steam Edition, plus fixes for missing prompts and errors.
To activate boxed Microsoft Flight Simulator X after installation, launch FSX, let the activation prompt appear, choose online activation, and enter the 25-character product key from the original packaging. FSX: Steam Edition does not use this process; sign in to the Steam account that owns it and launch the simulator through Steam.
Which FSX activation method should I use?
The correct activation method depends on the FSX edition you installed.
| FSX edition | How it is activated |
|---|---|
| Boxed FSX Standard or Deluxe | Use the FSX activation wizard and the product key supplied with the package. |
| FSX Gold Edition | Activate the Deluxe base simulator, then use the separate Acceleration key when installing that expansion. |
| Boxed FSX Acceleration | Install it over an activated FSX installation and activate it with its own product key. |
| FSX: Steam Edition | Steam verifies ownership through your account; no boxed-FSX activation key is required. |
Service packs do not require separate activation keys. A common mistake is entering the Acceleration key when the base FSX installer requests the Standard or Deluxe key, or trying to use a boxed key with Steam Edition.
How do I activate boxed FSX?
Boxed FSX normally displays its activation wizard when the simulator is started for the first time.
- Find the correct product key. Use the 25-character key printed on the original case, sleeve or product-key card. Do not use a disc serial number or an Acceleration key for the base simulator.
- Launch FSX with administrator permission. On modern Windows installations, right-click the FSX shortcut or
fsx.exeand choose the administrator option so the activation result can be written correctly. - Choose online activation. Follow the activation wizard and allow it to connect to the Internet. The exact button wording can differ slightly between releases.
- Enter or confirm the key. Type the key exactly as printed. The installer accepting a key does not necessarily mean that online activation has finished.
- Activate Acceleration separately. Gold Edition and boxed Acceleration installations may present another activation prompt after the expansion is installed. Use the Acceleration key, not the base FSX key.
- Restart FSX normally. A successful activation should remove the activation reminder and the reduced-duration restriction.
Our boxed-FSX activation walkthrough provides additional detail on when the prompt appears and how the original activation process works.
Does FSX: Steam Edition need a product key?
FSX: Steam Edition is activated by the Steam account that owns the simulator, not by the boxed FSX activation wizard.
Start Steam, sign in to the purchasing account, and launch FSX: Steam Edition from that library. Do not enter a boxed Standard, Deluxe, Gold or Acceleration key into Steam, and do not expect the original FSX activation window to appear.
What if the FSX activation prompt does not appear?
A missing prompt usually means FSX is already activated, Steam is handling the licence, or the boxed installation could not start its activation wizard correctly.
- Confirm which edition is installed before trying another key.
- For boxed FSX, close the simulator and run it once with administrator permission.
- Check that Windows has the correct date and time and that security software is not blocking FSX from connecting.
- If boxed FSX stops after a short reduced-functionality session or asks again at every launch, the activation state was not saved correctly.
- If the wizard offers telephone activation after an online failure, use only the number and installation ID displayed by the wizard; availability for this legacy product can vary.
Why is my FSX product key rejected?
An FSX key is commonly rejected because it belongs to the wrong edition, was entered incorrectly, has reached an activation limit after hardware changes, or came from a previously activated second-hand copy.
Work through our edition and product-key checks before reinstalling. Reinstallation rarely fixes a genuinely invalid key and may complicate an otherwise intact FSX setup.
If FSX activates but Windows later reports an “out of date license” message, use the separate Windows 11 licence repair steps. Avoid deleting licensing files or making unverified registry changes merely to force the activation prompt.
