Why is FSX Instant Replay jerky, and can I smooth it?

FSX Instant Replay is often jerky because it stores aircraft-state samples rather than a full video stream, then reconstructs the motion during playback. Low or uneven frame rates, heavy scenery and AI traffic make those samples less consistent. You can reduce the judder, but the built-in replay cannot always be made perfectly smooth.

Why does FSX Instant Replay stutter?

Jerky replay usually starts with irregular simulation updates during the original flight, then becomes worse when FSX has to render the scene again. Instant Replay is not screen recording: it retains recent simulation data and uses that data to recreate the aircraft's movement.

If FSX was struggling during the landing, fly-by or touchdown, the recorded positions may be unevenly spaced. A locked external camera makes each small jump particularly obvious, while the cockpit view can disguise it because the camera moves with the aircraft.

Playback also creates its own load. Changing to Spot or Locked Spot view can trigger aircraft textures, scenery objects and effects to load. FSX: Steam Edition retains the same basic replay limitations as the boxed editions; moving to Steam Edition alone does not produce smoother replays.

How do I make FSX Instant Replay smoother?

Give FSX a stable update rate before the manoeuvre and enough spare performance to render the replay.

  1. Check the live flight first. Press Shift+Z until the frame-rate display appears. Watch for sharp fluctuations rather than judging only the average figure; uneven timing during the original flight is likely to appear in replay.
  2. Set a sustainable frame-rate target. Use the Target frame rate control in the display settings and select a limit FSX can maintain in the demanding part of the flight. If a cap introduces rhythmic hitches, compare it with Unlimited and retain whichever gives steadier motion.
  3. Reduce update-heavy settings. Start with airline and general aviation traffic, road vehicles, boats, autogen, scenery complexity and demanding weather. Lower traffic and autogen first when the problem is worst near airports; reduce cloud and weather detail when it appears mainly in poor weather.
  4. Let the area finish loading. After loading the flight or changing aircraft, wait for scenery and textures to settle before flying the section you want to replay. During playback, allow an external view a moment to load before recording it as video.
  5. Use normal simulation rate. Fly and diagnose the replay at 1x speed. Very slow replay magnifies the gaps between recorded states, while accelerated flight can make timing errors more conspicuous.
  6. Run a clean comparison. Test a default aircraft at an uncomplicated airport with clear weather and traffic disabled. If that replay is smooth, restore the aircraft, scenery, weather and traffic separately until the cause returns.

Can an already-recorded jerky replay be repaired?

Only playback-side stuttering can be improved after the flight. Lowering scenery, weather and traffic settings may stop the whole image hitching, but it cannot recreate aircraft positions that were not captured consistently in the original replay data.

A mistake we see often is changing settings after a poor approach and expecting Instant Replay to rebuild it smoothly. Once the aircraft itself is stepping through the scene, the reliable fix is to improve frame consistency and fly that section again. Playing the replay slowly and speeding up the resulting video may hide minor rendering pauses, but it will not correct a hopping flight path.

Why do some add-on aircraft replay incorrectly?

FSX's replay system does not preserve every custom state used by sophisticated aircraft. Control surfaces, propellers, reversers, doors, lights, sounds and effects may be driven by aircraft-specific code rather than standard simulation variables, so their replay can disagree with the otherwise correct flight path.

If a simple default-aircraft test remains jerky despite steady live performance and settled scenery, you have probably reached the limit of the built-in replay engine. For polished footage, live video capture or a dedicated flight-data recorder is more dependable, provided it explicitly supports the aircraft and your edition of FSX.
