Fix no sound in FS2004 on Windows 10 or 11 by checking the Q mute key, Volume Mixer, output device, FS9.cfg and aircraft sound files.
To fix no sound in FS2004 on Windows 10 or 11, press Q once, unmute fs9.exe in Windows Volume Mixer, select the correct default output device, and restart FS2004. If a default aircraft is still silent, reset FS9.cfg; if only an add-on is silent, repair its sound folder or alias.
Fix FS2004 sound in this order
- Press Q once with FS2004 focused. The Q key toggles all simulator sound, so pressing it repeatedly can mute the sound again. Our FS2004 keyboard command reference covers this and the other default shortcuts.
- Check FS2004's Sound settings. Confirm that sound is enabled and that the engine, cockpit, environment and voice sliders have not been reduced to zero.
- Open Windows Volume Mixer while a flight is running. Find
fs9.exe, unmute it and raise its application volume. On Windows 11, also check its assigned output under the app section of Volume Mixer; Windows 10 provides equivalent per-application controls. FS2004 may not appear until a flight has loaded. - Select the audio device before launching FS2004. Set the speakers or headset as the Windows default output, close FS2004 completely and reopen it. FS2004 uses an old DirectSound audio system and often fails to follow a device changed while the simulator is running.
- Test a default aircraft. Load the default Cessna 172 with its engine running. If it has sound, Windows and FS2004's main audio system are working; the fault belongs to the original aircraft or one of its gauges.
- Reset the FS2004 configuration. Exit the simulator, open

What does the sound symptom tell you?

Why is only one FS2004 aircraft silent?
If default aircraft have sound, do not reinstall the whole simulator: the affected add-on is incomplete or points to a sound set that is not installed.
Open Aircraft\<aircraft name>\sound. It should contain a valid sound.cfg plus its WAV files, or an alias referring to another installed aircraft's sound directory. Check that Windows has not created sound.cfg.txt by hiding file extensions, and verify the alias folder name exactly.

Avoid copying arbitrary files into FS2004's main Sound directory; that can damage ATC, interface or environment audio without fixing the aircraft.
What if only ATC voices are missing?
ATC-only silence is not a general Windows audio failure. Raise the voice or ATC level in FS2004's sound settings and check that the language-specific .gvp voice-pack file remains in the simulator's main Sound folder. Restore it from matching installation media rather than using a file from another language edition.
Why does FS2004 lose sound after changing headsets?
FS2004 commonly keeps using the audio endpoint that existed when it started. Exit the simulator, make the intended headset or speakers the Windows default output, then relaunch it.
For Bluetooth equipment, select the normal stereo output rather than a low-quality hands-free or communications endpoint. If silence continues, temporarily disable spatial audio, audio enhancements and exclusive application control for that device. A standard 16-bit 44.1 or 48 kHz format is also a sensible compatibility test; change one option at a time so the actual cause remains clear.
When should I reinstall FS2004?
Reinstall only when a fresh FS9.cfg, a default aircraft and a known-working Windows output device all remain silent, or when files are missing from the main Sound folder. Do not download individual DLL or sound files from unknown packages.
Back up add-on aircraft and scenery, then repair the installation or perform a clean installation from the original media. Keep the first test completely default before restoring add-ons.
