To fix FS2004 full-screen mode on Windows 10 or 11, start the simulator windowed with Alt+Enter, select the monitor’s native resolution at 32-bit colour, then disable full-screen optimisations for fs9.exe. If it still opens black or crashes, regenerate FS9.cfg and test without overlays or extra monitors.
How do I restore FS2004 full-screen mode?
Work through these fixes in order, testing FS2004 after each change rather than applying everything at once.
- Return to windowed mode. Press Alt+Enter once and allow several seconds for the DirectX display mode to change. If the picture returns, leave FS2004 windowed while adjusting its settings. Alt+Enter and other useful combinations are covered in our FS2004 keyboard-shortcut reference.
- Select a compatible resolution. Open
Options > Settings > Displayand find the hardware or full-screen resolution controls. Choose the monitor’s native resolution with 32-bit colour. If that mode is unavailable, test a lower standard resolution at 32-bit colour instead of forcing a custom mode. - Remove graphics overrides for the first test. Set anti-aliasing and other driver-level overrides to application-controlled. Once full-screen mode works, restore enhancements one at a time so the setting that causes the failure is obvious.
- Disable Windows full-screen optimisations. Exit FS2004, right-click the actual
fs9.exefile, open Properties and use the Compatibility tab to enable Disable fullscreen optimisations. If the image is enlarged, clipped or positioned incorrectly, open the high-DPI settings and test scaling performed by Application. - Regenerate FS9.cfg. Close the simulator, open
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9, and renameFS9.cfgtoFS9.cfg.old. FS2004 creates a clean configuration file on its next start and redetects the graphics device. Temporarily turn off recording overlays, frame-rate displays, shader injectors and other programs that hook into DirectX. Test with one monitor, make it the Windows primary display, and temporarily disable HDR or variable refresh if the black screen persists.
- Check which GPU runs FS2004. On a laptop or dual-GPU PC, add
fs9.exeunder Windows graphics settings and test the high-performance GPU. Update the graphics driver if the problem began after Windows was installed; roll back the driver instead if full-screen mode failed immediately after a driver update.
Why does FS2004 go black when I press Alt+Enter?
FS2004 uses an older DirectX full-screen mode, so a black screen usually means Windows, the graphics driver or an overlay could not complete the switch to the requested resolution. It does not necessarily mean that FS2004 has crashed.

If a widescreen mode works but the cockpit looks unnaturally stretched, the full-screen switch itself is working. FS2004’s older aspect handling can distort some 2D panels; use an aspect-preserved 4:3 resolution or windowed mode when that panel is the priority.
Should I use compatibility mode or run FS2004 as administrator?
Compatibility mode and administrator access are secondary tests, not the first fix for a full-screen problem. Applying every compatibility option together often hides the actual cause and can introduce new permission or scaling behaviour.
After testing the steps above, try one available Windows XP compatibility setting and remove it if nothing changes. Run as administrator only when FS2004 cannot save its configuration or the installation folder has restricted permissions. What if full-screen mode still crashes?
A clean default flight determines whether the fault belongs to FS2004’s display system or a specific add-on. Load a default aircraft at a default airport with external utilities closed; if that works full-screen, reintroduce the aircraft, panel, scenery and utilities separately.
- If only one aircraft fails, suspect its panel gauge or another aircraft-specific component.
- If every flight fails after installing a graphics enhancement, remove its injected files or wrapper and retest the original
fs9.exeenvironment. - If FS2004 reports a missing DirectX file, repair the signed legacy DirectX components rather than downloading an individual DLL from an unverified source.

A maximised window is the sensible fallback when FS2004 is stable there but the graphics driver will not support its exclusive full-screen mode. FS2004 has no native borderless-full-screen option, and remote-desktop or virtual-machine sessions may not expose a compatible exclusive display mode at all.
