A flight simulator download is usually slow because the server, your connection, the launcher or your storage cannot sustain the transfer. Pause competing traffic, use wired Ethernet, confirm free disk space, remove bandwidth limits, restart the launcher and router, then test whether the slowdown affects every download or only the simulator.
The same diagnosis applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), X-Plane, DCS, Prepar3D, FSX and FlightGear, although each uses a different launcher or installer.
Is the server or my connection causing the slow download?
The pattern of the slowdown usually identifies the bottleneck faster than changing settings at random.

How do I fix a slow flight simulator download?
- Check the download queue. Pause operating-system updates, cloud synchronisation, streaming and downloads on other devices. On a console, close running games and remove other titles from the update queue.
- Read the units correctly. Internet connections are normally advertised in
Mbps, while launchers may showMB/s. Eight bits make one byte, so a 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical ceiling of about 12.5 MB/s before overhead. - Remove bandwidth limits. Inspect the simulator launcher, platform client, operating system and router for download caps, metered-connection settings or traffic-priority rules. A forgotten limit is a common cause of a speed that never changes.
- Improve the network path. Use Ethernet where possible. Otherwise, move closer to the router and choose the least congested suitable Wi-Fi band. Restart the router if every device is slow, but do not keep rebooting it when only one simulator service is affected.
- Check both drives for free space. The install drive and the system or temporary drive need working room for compressed packages, extraction and verification. An SSD helps when the installer alternates between downloading and unpacking, but it cannot repair a slow server connection.
- Refresh the launcher once. Pause and resume the transfer, then restart the launcher if that does not help. Avoid repeatedly deleting partial packages or changing the installation folder; that can force a complete redownload.
- Inspect security activity. Check whether trusted simulator files are being scanned repeatedly or quarantined. Permit a verified official installer when necessary, but do not disable the entire firewall or antivirus package merely to gain speed.
- Wait when the evidence points to the server. If other large downloads run normally and the simulator alone is slow, local network changes are unlikely to help. Retry after the publisher's delivery service is less busy.
Why does the download speed fall to zero while installing?
A zero network rate does not always mean the download is stuck. Large flight simulators often download a compressed package, stop transferring while they unpack and verify it, then request the next package.
On PC, inspect network, disk and CPU activity in the operating system's performance tools. If the disk or processor is active, let the installer work. If network and disk activity both remain idle and the progress indicator does not change, restart the launcher once and check for a failed package or storage error.
Should I change DNS, use a VPN or disable antivirus?
DNS changes rarely improve sustained download throughput because DNS only helps locate the server initially. A VPN usually adds overhead; it may bypass a poor route in an unusual case, but it is not a sensible first fix.
Do not disable security protection wholesale or make random MTU and port-forwarding changes. Those measures can create new connection or security problems without addressing an overloaded server, a launcher cap or slow file extraction.
What differs with MSFS, Steam and add-on downloads?
Microsoft Flight Simulator may download, decompress and verify packages inside the simulator rather than entirely through the platform client.
