Why is VNAV not working in X-Plane, and how do I fix it?

VNAV usually fails in X-Plane because the aircraft does not support coupled vertical navigation, the active route lacks usable altitude constraints, or the altitude selector and autopilot modes block capture. Confirm the avionics’ VNAV capability, repair the flight plan, select the cleared descent altitude, arm VNAV before top of descent, and monitor its mode annunciation.

Does every X-Plane aircraft support VNAV?

No. X-Plane 11 and 12 provide the underlying navigation and autopilot systems, but each aircraft determines what its avionics can actually do. A visible VNAV or VNV page may calculate top of descent and vertical deviation without coupling that path to the autopilot.

Many general-aviation installations provide descent guidance only, not climb VNAV. Custom airliners may support full climb, cruise and descent profiles but require route execution, performance data and a cruise altitude first. How do I fix VNAV not working in X-Plane?

Fix VNAV by checking the route from the active leg forwards, then confirming the selected altitude and autopilot state before attempting another capture.

  1. Confirm that coupled VNAV is supported. Establish whether the aircraft offers an autopilot-coupled vertical path, advisory guidance only, or no VNAV implementation. An inoperative button in an aircraft without coupled VNAV is not an X-Plane fault.
  2. Activate a continuous flight plan. The intended leg must be active, with no unresolved discontinuity, manual vector or route gap ahead of the aircraft.   3. Check the altitude constraints. VNAV needs at least one valid downstream altitude or a defined vertical-profile target. Imported routes often contain lateral waypoints but omit altitude restrictions. Confirm that the FMS recognises the constraints rather than merely displaying waypoint names.
  4. Set the altitude selector correctly. For a descent, select the lower altitude to which the aircraft is cleared. Many systems will not leave the present altitude while the preselector remains at or above it, and they will level at the selected altitude even when the calculated path continues lower. Never select below an ATC clearance merely to force VNAV to descend.
  5. Use the correct navigation source. Select GPS or FMS guidance rather than VLOC, make sure the flight director is on, and verify that the autopilot is tracking the active lateral leg. Our GPS-source, active-leg and NAV-capture checks cover the associated lateral failures.
  6. Arm VNAV before the calculated descent point. Look for an armed vertical-path mode on the flight-mode annunciator. A lit button alone does not prove that the autopilot has armed or captured anything.
  7. Manage speed and thrust. VNAV normally commands a pitch path; it does not guarantee automatic thrust control. Reduce power and use the aircraft’s approved drag devices when necessary to avoid becoming too high or too fast.

Use the mode annunciation to identify the fault

The flight-mode annunciator is more useful than the VNAV button because it shows whether vertical guidance is unavailable, armed, captured or replaced by another pitch mode.

Why is VNAV armed but not descending?

Armed VNAV means the system is waiting for capture conditions; it does not mean a descent has begun. The aircraft may still be before top of descent, outside the capturable path, blocked by the altitude selector or approaching a break in the route.

  • If the aircraft is above the path, VNAV may refuse to command an abrupt dive. Use an appropriate vertical-speed or flight-level-change mode to regain a safe intercept, respecting speed and altitude restrictions, then re-arm VNAV if the aircraft permits it.
  • If the aircraft is below the path, the system may remain armed until the calculated profile reaches the aircraft. Avoid climbing merely to chase the vertical-deviation pointer unless the procedure requires it.
  • If VNAV briefly captures and drops out, check for pilot inputs, duplicate hardware assignments or a switch continually sending another pitch-mode command.

A mistake we see constantly is watching the magenta vertical cue while ignoring the active autopilot mode. The annunciator, not the pointer, tells you what is controlling pitch.

Does VNAV control an RNAV or ILS approach?

VNAV does not automatically replace an approach’s dedicated vertical mode. Garmin-style RNAV approaches with approved vertical guidance generally use GP, while an ILS uses GS; these are normally armed through the approach mode after the correct procedure, frequency or GPS guidance is established.

VNAV may descend along a STAR and the initial approach segments, then hand over to the glidepath or glideslope. Some custom airliner FMS packages can remain in a VNAV path mode for particular approaches, so follow that aircraft’s documented procedure rather than applying G1000 logic universally.

Aircraft, navigation-data and plug-in checks

If a previously working VNAV installation fails on every route, isolate the aircraft and plug-ins before resetting all X-Plane preferences.

  • Test a short route in an unmodified aircraft whose manual explicitly supports coupled VNAV. If that works, the simulator’s basic navigation system is functioning.
  • Temporarily disable avionics, autopilot and hardware-interface plug-ins from Resources/plugins, then reload X-Plane. A plug-in can intercept commands or overwrite autopilot datarefs.
  • Remove duplicate VNAV, vertical-speed, flight-level-change and autopilot-disconnect assignments from controllers and switch panels.
  • Check Log.txt in the main X-Plane folder immediately after reproducing the fault; repeated errors naming the aircraft or one of its plug-ins point to an add-on problem.
  • If procedures or constraints are missing, mismatched or rejected, verify and update the AIRAC data used by X-Plane. Changing navdata will not repair unsupported VNAV, but it can restore procedure legs and altitude restrictions needed to build the profile.
