GPS pointing away from the runway? Find the cause—wrong active leg, approach transition, nav source or navdata—and follow the right fix.
In a flight simulator, the GPS usually points away from the runway because it is guiding you to the active flight-plan waypoint, procedure turn or missed-approach fix—not directly to the runway. A wrong active leg, wrong approach, navigation-source mismatch or scenery/navdata disagreement can produce the same symptom.
This is a general flight-simulator navigation issue across Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, X-Plane and Prepar3D, although button names and annunciations vary between aircraft. The first task is to identify what the displayed arrow, line or needle represents.
What is the GPS actually pointing at?
The GPS guides you along the active flight-plan leg, not automatically towards the runway threshold. If that leg ends at a waypoint behind or beside the aircraft, the commanded course can legitimately point away from the airport.

A direct-to command for an airport commonly targets its reference point near the centre of the field, not a runway threshold or final approach course. Why can a valid approach point away from the runway?
A correctly loaded approach may initially lead away from the runway because published procedures are not always straight-in routes from the aircraft's present position.
- Approach transition or course reversal: the selected initial approach fix may be behind you, or the procedure may include an outbound leg, hold or procedure turn before returning inbound.
- Wrong active leg: the GPS may still be navigating to the origin airport, an earlier waypoint or a fix that the aircraft has already passed.
- Missed approach active: after the missed-approach point, the next leg normally leads away from the runway towards a holding fix.
- Wrong runway or transition: similarly named procedures can serve opposite runway ends. Loading the wrong one produces guidance that looks almost exactly reversed.
- Offset RNAV course: some approaches are intentionally offset from the runway centreline. Check the procedure rather than assuming every GPS final must point directly down the runway; our guide to checking and flying an RNAV final approach explains the distinction.
- ILS source mismatch: an ILS final is guided by the localiser, not the GPS course. The GPS may remain useful for waypoint sequencing, but the lateral source must be NAV or VLOC unless the simulated avionics switch automatically.
- Scenery and navdata mismatch: an older airport layout may use a previous runway position or number while the GPS contains newer procedure data.
How do I fix GPS guidance pointing the wrong way?
- Read the active waypoint. Check the waypoint name, active-leg highlight and lateral-mode annunciation. Do not judge the route from one bearing arrow alone.
- Inspect the complete flight plan. Find the leg immediately before and after the active waypoint. Look for an earlier fix, duplicated identifier, discontinuity, hold or missed-approach segment.
- Confirm the destination procedure. Match the airport, runway, approach type and transition to the route you intended to fly. ATC assigning a different runway does not automatically update every GPS or imported flight plan.
- Select the appropriate leg. En route, activate the intended next leg or use direct-to only when that is the route you want. On an approach, use the correct transition; select vectors-to-final only when being vectored, rather than as a general shortcut.
- Check sequencing. If OBS or SUSP is displayed unexpectedly, restore automatic waypoint sequencing using the control provided by that GPS. Suspension at the missed-approach point may be intentional, so confirm the phase of flight before changing it.
- Choose the correct navigation source. Keep GPS selected for an RNAV approach. For an ILS, tune and identify the localiser where the aircraft requires manual tuning, then select or verify NAV/VLOC and arm the appropriate approach mode. See our guidance on changing from GPS to NAV/VLOC for an ILS.
- Compare the procedure with the airport. If the coded final course does not match the visible runway, check for old scenery, conflicting airport add-ons or separate navigation databases using different data cycles. These IFR route, source and database checks help isolate that mismatch.
Should the GPS line align with the runway centreline?
The GPS line should align with the runway only when the active final segment is designed to do so. A direct-to-airport route, transition leg, circling approach or intentionally offset RNAV approach can end near the airport without following the runway centreline.
A small difference between the displayed course and runway number is also normal because runway numbers are rounded from magnetic direction and may lag changes in magnetic variation. A line pointing substantially away from the airport, however, usually indicates the wrong leg, procedure or flight phase.
Why does the autopilot turn away when the GPS route looks correct?
If the magenta route is correct but the aircraft turns elsewhere, the fault is usually the selected autopilot mode or navigation source rather than the GPS plan. Check the flight-mode annunciator for GPS/NAV, HDG, ROL or LOC, and verify that the CDI source shown on the primary display matches the source the autopilot is following.
The autopilot follows the active guidance, not the route you intended to select. A heading mode left engaged, an uncaptured course, the wrong CDI source or an active waypoint behind the aircraft can all command a turn away from the runway.
