What are the longest runways in flight simulators?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find the longest runways in flight simulators, from Edwards' lakebed to 5,000 m paved strips, with ICAO codes, lengths and scenery caveats.

The longest runway represented in some flight simulators is Edwards AFB's Rogers Dry Lake runway 17/35, at about 39,097 ft (11,917 m), though it is an unpaved lakebed strip. For paved runways, old Qamdo Bamda scenery may show 5,500 m; active examples include Zhukovsky at 5,402 m and Ulyanovsk Vostochny at 5,000 m.

Which flight simulator runway is the longest?

Rogers Dry Lake's marked runway 17/35 at Edwards Air Force Base is the overall winner if dry-lake runways count. It is far longer and wider than a conventional runway, but Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane do not all represent its markings, start positions or usable surface in the same way.

For an extreme paved runway, the answer depends on the age of the airport scenery. Older databases may retain Qamdo Bamda's former 5,500 m runway, while newer scenery should show its shorter replacement. Zhukovsky's 5,402 m runway is a better benchmark when comparing modern airport databases.

These are airports to search for by ICAO code, not a guarantee that every base installation contains an accurate rendition. Restricted military and test fields are usually flyable in free flight, although realistic online operations or career modes may impose limitations.

Why do runway lengths differ between simulators?

Runway lengths differ because each simulator and scenery package uses airport information from a particular date. FSX and Prepar3D stock airports often preserve older layouts, while Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane can have newer airport geometry or community-supplied corrections.

  • Historic changes: Qamdo Bamda is the clearest example; old scenery can show the former 5,500 m strip rather than its replacement.
  • Magnetic renumbering: Edwards' main paved runway may appear as 04R/22L or 05R/23L without its physical length having changed.
  • Scenery overrides: An airport BGL or X-Plane apt.dat supplied by an add-on can replace the stock runway, sometimes leaving duplicate markings when two packages conflict.
  • Incomplete lakebed modelling: A simulator may render Rogers Dry Lake visually but omit its selectable runway starts or treat the surface as ordinary terrain.

Will an AIRAC update correct the runway?

An AIRAC update normally changes navigation data, procedures, frequencies and identifiers; it does not usually rebuild the visible runway. If the FMS and scenery disagree, the airport scenery package needs updating or replacing rather than just the navigation database.

Does the full runway length equal the usable distance?

Physical runway length is not always the distance available for landing or take-off. A displaced threshold reduces the landing distance available in that direction, while stopways and paved overruns must not be counted as normal runway.

Airport-selection screens often quote the physical strip length, whereas an aircraft's navigation database may use declared distances such as TORA or LDA. This explains why two apparently authoritative readouts can disagree. It also matters at high-elevation airports such as Shigatse and Denver, where density altitude increases the take-off roll despite the generous pavement.

Which long runway should I choose in the simulator?

Choose Rogers Dry Lake to explore the absolute maximum marked landing area, Zhukovsky or Ulyanovsk for an extreme paved runway, and Denver when you want a long runway in a conventional airline environment.

For FSX and Prepar3D, our Edwards AFB detail and activity enhancement improves the default field, although lakebed runway behaviour still depends on the underlying simulator. Our ready-made Space Shuttle approach for FSX provides a direct way to experience the 15,000 ft Shuttle Landing Facility.

For a more typical airline comparison, the MSFS Dallas scenery package with Dallas/Fort Worth International includes a documented 13,401 ft runway. It is shorter than the record holders, but more representative of the long runways airline crews regularly encounter.
