To fly the Cessna 172 in FlightGear, select the C172, begin on a runway with the engine running, set take-off trim and flaps up, apply full power, rotate near 55 KIAS, climb around 75 KIAS, trim for level flight, then approach near 65 KIAS and flare gently.

Those speeds are sensible starting targets for a typical C172P, not universal limits. FlightGear supports different C172 models, and aircraft weight, wind and configuration all matter, so follow the selected aircraft’s checklist and airspeed markings where they differ.

Set up the FlightGear C172 for a first flight

The easiest first flight starts on a runway at a low-elevation airport in daylight, with calm weather and the engine already running.

  1. Select the aircraft: Choose the Cessna 172P or the closest C172 variant available in your FlightGear installation. Panels and system depth can differ between models.
  2. Choose a runway start: Starting on the runway avoids introducing cold-start problems while learning basic handling. Select clear weather and little or no crosswind.
  3. Assign the controls: Calibrate pitch, roll, rudder, throttle, brakes and elevator trim. Check for duplicated assignments and confirm that no axis operates backwards.

What speeds should I use in the FlightGear C172?

For a typical C172P in ordinary conditions, use these indicated airspeeds as practical training targets.

Extend flaps only inside the white arc on the airspeed indicator and within the model’s stated flap limit. Do not treat these target speeds as substitutes for the aircraft checklist, especially with an add-on C172, high weight or strong gusts.

Take off and climb

A normal C172 take-off uses full power, enough right rudder to remain on the centreline and a gentle rotation rather than a sharp pull.

  1. Line up: Centre the aeroplane on the runway and check that the heading indicator agrees approximately with the runway direction.
  2. Apply power: Advance the throttle smoothly to full power. Confirm that engine RPM rises normally and that the airspeed indicator begins moving. At a high-elevation airport, use the model’s mixture-setting procedure rather than assuming full rich gives maximum power.
  3. Hold the centreline: Use right rudder as required to counter the left-turning tendency. Avoid steering with large aileron inputs.
  4. Rotate: At roughly 50–55 KIAS, apply gentle back pressure until the nose rises a few degrees. Do not use trim as an elevator or haul the aeroplane off before it is ready.
  5. Set climb attitude: Adjust pitch to hold about 70–80 KIAS. If speed falls, lower the nose; if it rises excessively, raise the nose slightly.
  6. Trim: Once the climb speed and attitude are stable, trim until little continuous pressure is needed on the yoke.

How do I trim and turn without overcontrolling?

Make small control movements, establish the desired attitude first and then use trim to remove sustained pressure.

For level flight, lower the nose as the aeroplane approaches the chosen altitude, reduce to a suitable cruise power setting and allow the speed to settle. Roughly 2,200–2,400 RPM is a useful low-altitude starting range, but the correct setting depends on the model and conditions. Trim only after pitch, power and speed are nearly stable.

For a gentle turn, roll to about 20–30 degrees of bank, apply a little rudder in the direction of the turn and add slight back pressure to hold altitude. Keep the slip indicator centred by applying rudder towards the ball. Begin rolling level before reaching the desired heading because the aeroplane continues turning during recovery.

A mistake we see constantly is chasing every small pitch movement with trim. Trim is not an autopilot: use the yoke to correct attitude, wait for the aeroplane to settle, and then adjust the trim in small increments.

Fly a circuit and land

A simple rectangular circuit lets you practise every essential C172 skill without leaving the airport area.

Climb to the airport’s normal circuit height, usually around 1,000 feet above the airfield unless local procedures specify otherwise. Before departure, the FlightGear map setup and route-tracking guide can help you identify the runway layout and keep the airport in sight.

  1. Downwind: Fly parallel to the runway at about 85–95 KIAS. Maintain altitude, keep a sensible distance from the runway and complete the landing checks.
  2. Abeam the threshold: Reduce power and hold the nose sufficiently high to decelerate. Apply carburettor heat if the selected model and checklist call for it. Once below the flap limit, select the first stage of flap.
  3. Base leg: Turn towards the extended runway centreline, aim for approximately 65–75 KIAS and add another flap stage if needed.
  4. Final approach: Align with the centreline and stabilise near 60–65 KIAS. Use pitch mainly to control speed and power mainly to adjust the descent path, recognising that each affects the other.
  5. Flare: Cross the threshold under control, gradually reduce power to idle and look towards the far end of the runway. A few feet above the surface, raise the nose gently to reduce the descent rate.
  6. Roll out: Hold the nose wheel off until it settles naturally, keep straight with rudder and brake gently only after the main wheels are firmly down.

When should I go around?

Go around whenever the C172 is not aligned, on speed and on a controlled descent by roughly 500 feet above the runway, or whenever the landing no longer looks safe.

Apply full power, set carburettor heat cold if fitted, control the pitch and establish a positive climb. Retract flaps in stages according to the aircraft checklist; removing all flap at once can cause a sudden loss of lift and sink close to the ground.

What if the C172 engine is not running?

Use an engine-running runway start for initial flying practice; a parking position may load the aircraft cold and dark.

For a cold start, the usual sequence is parking brake set, fuel selector on both tanks, mixture rich near sea level, throttle slightly open, electrical power on, magnetos selected and starter engaged. Release the starter once the engine fires, set a low idle and confirm oil pressure. Priming requirements vary, and excessive priming can flood the engine, so use the checklist supplied with that specific FlightGear aircraft.

If the engine cranks but will not fire, check the fuel selector, mixture, magnetos and throttle position. If it starts but produces little power, verify that the mixture and throttle axes are not reversed or being overridden by another controller assignment.
