One point that often becomes muddled in VFR discussion is the amount of attention given to the instrument. Plan a legal VFR route first, then use the VOR as one of several ways to establish and monitor position.

  1. Plan for weather, terrain and airspace. Check the applicable VFR minima, cloud base, terrain clearance, controlled or restricted airspace and suitable diversion options.   2. Confirm that the station is usable. Check its published status and whether your altitude and distance are reasonable for line-of-sight reception. Terrain can block a signal even when the station appears close on the map.
  3. Tune and identify the VOR. Put the frequency in the active NAV receiver and verify the Morse identifier or decoded station name. Do not rely on a station that cannot be positively identified.

  5. Set the course and check TO/FROM. A radial extends from the station. To track outbound on the 090 radial, select 090 and expect FROM. To fly inbound along that same line, select 270 and expect TO.
  6. Intercept and track without chasing the needle. Use a sensible intercept angle, reduce it as the CDI centres and establish a wind-corrected heading. The selected course describes the intended track; the heading needed to hold it may differ because of wind.
  7. Recognise station passage. Near the station, the CDI becomes unusually sensitive and may fluctuate in the cone of confusion. Hold a sensible heading, expect the TO/FROM indication to reverse and establish the next leg rather than making abrupt turns.

Aircraft may approach the station from several directions and at different altitudes. Keep a sharp outside scan, monitor or use the appropriate frequency when required, follow local reporting procedures and avoid fixating on the CDI during station passage. Do not assume another pilot is following the same radial, altitude or flight rules.

Avoid circling directly over the VOR while troubleshooting the receiver or deciding on the next leg. If workload rises, maintain a predictable path clear of known traffic flows while remaining within the applicable airspace and VFR requirements.

Can VFR pilots fly along VOR airways?

Published IFR minimum en-route altitudes are not automatically instructions for a VFR flight. The VFR pilot must still satisfy the applicable terrain, obstacle, cruising-altitude, cloud-clearance and airspace requirements. The term VFR airway can also refer to a specifically published VFR route or corridor in some countries. That is different from informally following a conventional IFR airway under VFR.

In ATC24, are airliners allowed to do VFR?

Airliners are not automatically prohibited from VFR simply because of their size, although real commercial operations, company procedures and particular airspace may require IFR. Most normal airline transport flights are therefore conducted under IFR.

In ATC24, the controlling answer is the rule set for that session or community. If its rules reserve airliners for IFR operations, that simulation restriction applies even though aircraft type alone does not decide VFR or IFR in real aviation. What does JUL 090 mean on a chart or route?

JUL 090 normally means the 090-degree radial extending from the VOR identified as JUL, provided that JUL is the navaid identifier in that chart or database context.

It describes a line from the station, not necessarily the heading the aircraft should fly. Wind correction may require a different heading. To fly outbound on that radial, set 090 with a FROM indication; to fly towards the station on the same line, set 270 with TO.

A radial alone also does not define one precise point. A fix on JUL 090 needs another element, such as DME distance, a crossing radial or an identifiable visual position. VOR radials are normally based on the station’s published magnetic reference, which may not exactly match present-day local magnetic variation.

How should a VFR flight simmer practise VOR navigation?

A VFR flight simmer learns the most by using the aircraft’s raw NAV receiver in visual conditions while cross-checking the result against the outside world.

  • Choose a short route between VORs that should be receivable at the planned altitude.
  • Use the NAV radio and CDI or HSI rather than following only a moving-map line.
  • Write down each desired radial, inbound or outbound course, expected TO/FROM indication and estimated leg time.
  • Ignore or hide the moving map until a checkpoint, then use it to assess the error rather than steer continuously.
  • Repeat with a crosswind so that course and heading are no longer identical.

A magenta GPS line leading to a VOR’s coordinates is GPS waypoint navigation, not reception of the VOR signal. The flight can still be VFR, but it is not practising conventional radio navigation.

Do you need VOR Simulator Pro to practise?

If by VOR Simulator Pro you mean a dedicated VOR-training app, it is optional. Such a trainer can help visualise radial geometry, but repeat the exercise in the intended simulator aircraft because source selectors, receiver controls, HSI behaviour and station-identification features differ between panels and add-ons.

How do you change from VFR to IFR in MSFS 2024?

To change from VFR to IFR in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 before departure, edit or rebuild the route as an IFR flight in the pre-flight planner or EFB, then ensure the IFR plan is sent to the aircraft and simulator ATC where those are separate actions.

Loading an instrument approach, changing the CDI from GPS to VLOC, tuning a VOR or entering cloud does not convert the flight to IFR. If already airborne, request an IFR clearance through the built-in ATC interface if the chosen mode and loaded plan provide that option, and remain VFR while waiting for it.
