When does ATC require a flight plan?
A flight plan is expected for normal IFR operations but is usually unnecessary for local VFR flying. In a simulator, “filing” generally means submitting or activating the route within the flight-planning system used by that particular ATC engine; nothing is being sent to a real aviation authority.
- Circuits and local VFR: No flight plan is normally required. Contact ground or tower and request the appropriate VFR service.
- VFR cross-country: A plan is often optional, although filing one may help built-in ATC identify your destination and offer hand-offs.
- IFR flight: File or load an IFR plan, then request and read back the IFR clearance. Filing the route does not itself constitute a clearance.
- VFR flight following: A flight plan is not normally the same thing as flight following. Simulator support for this service varies.
Real-world rules depend on the country and airspace. A VFR flight plan is primarily used for route and search-and-rescue information in many jurisdictions, while entry into controlled airspace still requires the appropriate ATC clearance. Normal IFR operations require both a filed plan and an IFR clearance.
Is entering a route in the GPS the same as filing it?
No. A route entered only in the GPS, FMS or navigation computer may guide the aircraft without giving the ATC system any route information.
This separation causes a mistake we see constantly: the magenta line is present, but ATC offers only local VFR options or vectors the aircraft somewhere else. For route-aware ATC, the plan must be created and submitted through a planning method the simulator recognises. Some aircraft and add-ons synchronise their routes with ATC; others keep the avionics and ATC plans entirely separate.
How do I use ATC without a flight plan?
Use the available airport and VFR requests rather than asking for an IFR clearance.
- Start at a parking position if you want the complete ground sequence. Starting on the runway may remove taxi and departure options.
- Power and select the correct radio, then tune the published ground, tower or advisory frequency. Built-in ATC panels may tune it automatically.
- Request taxi and departure at a controlled airport. State or select your intended direction of departure when the simulator provides that option.
- Contact the next service if available. Depending on the ATC implementation, that may be departure control, a flight-information service or no further controller at all.
- Contact the destination for arrival instructions and landing clearance. An uncontrolled airfield may use an advisory or traffic frequency rather than ATC.

Why does ATC not recognise my flight plan?
ATC usually fails to recognise a route because the plan was loaded into the wrong system or was not activated as an IFR plan.
- The route exists only in the avionics: Load or file it through the simulator or ATC add-on as well.
- The flight was launched as VFR: Recreate or refile the route as IFR before requesting an IFR clearance.
- The plan was changed after loading: Some ATC engines do not detect edits made directly in the FMS. Refile, synchronise or reload the flight using the revised route.
- Two ATC systems are running: Built-in ATC and an add-on may maintain separate plans. Use the planning method belonging to the ATC service you intend to follow.
- No ATC options appear at all: Check electrical power, the active radio, frequency, reception range and whether assistance settings are handling communications automatically.
Do built-in, add-on and online ATC follow the same rules?
