Set up formation practice before take-off

A safe session starts with compatible aircraft, stable conditions and a briefing that leaves no uncertainty about separation.

  • Assign one leader: the leader controls heading, altitude, speed and manoeuvre timing. Everyone else maintains separation and follows the brief.
  • Match aircraft and configuration: use the same aircraft type, similar fuel loads and identical weather where possible. If the aircraft differ, place the slower or less manoeuvrable type in the lead and remain within its limits.
  • Agree the calls: include ready, joining, in position, blind, breaking away and knock it off. Also brief the joining side, minimum spacing, lost-communications plan and recovery airport.
  • Use forgiving conditions: begin in daylight, good visibility, light wind and smooth air. Turn off collision damage while learning, but do not use that as permission to pass through another aircraft.
  • Check views and performance: use a stable cockpit view and a sensible field of view. An excessively wide view makes the leader appear farther away and disguises closure. Low frame rates and multiplayer stutters demand wider spacing.

What formation position is best for beginners?

A loose echelon position off one wing and slightly behind the leader is the easiest starting point because the leader remains visible and there is room to correct mistakes.

Begin several wingspans away rather than copying close display-team spacing. Keep enough lateral and fore-and-aft separation that an unexpected roll, pause or network jump cannot overlap the aircraft. Avoid sitting directly behind the leader, where the aircraft may obscure your view and simulated wake effects can disturb control.

Choose two fixed visual references on the leader, such as the wingtip against one cockpit point and the canopy against another. When both references remain fixed, your relative position is stable. Watching only the leader’s apparent size tells you about distance but not lateral or vertical drift.

How do you join and hold formation?

The safest join-up uses a stationary target position beside the leader, a small closing speed and an early reduction in power.

  1. Stabilise the leader: fly straight and level at the briefed speed until the follower reports ready. Avoid autopilot mode changes or turns during the join.
  2. Approach from the assigned side: remain visible to the leader and aim for the planned station, not the aircraft itself. Never make a fast intercept towards the leader’s fuselage.
  3. Control closure: use only a small speed advantage. Judge relative movement visually rather than waiting for the airspeed indicator, which shows your own speed rather than the closing rate.
  4. Reduce power early: arrest most of the closure before reaching the station. Throttle response is delayed in many aircraft, so a large late reduction often produces an overshoot followed by another excessive correction.
  5. Hold position with tiny inputs: use power mainly for fore-and-aft movement, gentle bank for lateral position and pitch for vertical position. These controls interact, so correct one developing trend at a time.
  6. Keep a disciplined scan: maintain a soft visual focus on the leader and use the two reference points. Instrument checks should be brief and made only after the formation is stable.

Trim for the leader’s speed while still at wide spacing. Repeated trimming close to the leader can create abrupt pitch changes. A leader may use autopilot during a long straight segment, but the wing aircraft should normally be hand-flown because an autopilot tracks absolute targets rather than relative position.

How should a formation turn be flown?

A formation turn should be announced, entered gently and flown by preserving the same visual picture rather than copying the leader’s bank angle mechanically.

The aircraft on the outside travels around a larger arc and generally needs more power; the inside aircraft travels a shorter arc and generally needs less. Anticipate that difference as the leader rolls in, then use small corrections. Waiting until the station has already opened or compressed creates the familiar accordion effect.

Start with shallow turns and generous spacing. In turbulence or a laggy multiplayer session, use a loose echelon or trail rather than trying to maintain rigid close formation. Formation loops, rolls and other aerobatic manoeuvres are advanced work; practise the underlying coordination, energy management and recovery discipline alone before adding another aircraft.

What should you do if you lose sight of the leader?

If you lose sight of the leader, call blind or knock it off immediately and execute the deconfliction plan agreed before take-off.

  • Do not turn towards the leader’s last observed position or continue guessing where the aircraft went.
  • Move away using the briefed direction, altitude block or heading while the leader maintains predictable flight unless terrain makes that unsafe.
  • State your heading and altitude clearly. If communications have failed, continue the lost-communications separation plan.
  • Rejoin only after both pilots have confirmed their positions and the leader has established another stable straight segment.

There is no universal break direction suitable for every formation geometry, so inventing one after visual contact is lost is dangerous. The escape manoeuvre must be agreed for each aircraft’s side and position. Treat severe network warping exactly like lost sight: widen the formation or stop the exercise.

Should beginners attempt formation take-offs and landings?

Beginners should take off separately, join in the air and separate again before landing.

Formation take-offs add runway-width, directional-control, engine-response and crosswind problems before either aircraft has much room to escape. Formation landings demand precise alignment and leave little margin for bounce, brake or steering differences. Use a planned interval so only one aircraft occupies the runway at a time, accounting for any simulated wake turbulence.

Most unstable formations come from oversized corrections, poor visual references or attempts to chase multiplayer movement.

When two corrections fail to stop the same trend, do not make a third larger one. Move away, stabilise and begin another join-up; a controlled reset is safer and teaches more than trying to rescue a collapsing formation.
